The Experience

You’ll feel happy to arrive here. A welcome hamper is brimming with biscuits, chocolates and bread from the famous Pump Street Bakery up the road, bottles of Adnams ale and a pack of Pinney’s smoked salmon. You’ll also find a voucher to use in their restaurant, baskets for shopping, lovely fresh flower arrangements and a neat dog blanket with a bowl and some treats.

The open plan living and kitchen space is neat-as-a-pin, sofas are comfy and covered in soft throws, the games cupboard is inviting, china and glass are beautiful, knives are sharp and you’ll find good cookery books. You have your own garden for outdoor meals.

This is a rare, secluded spot – if the silence is broken it will be by birdsong, possibly the call of the gulls. The water meadows lead on to the salt marshes with their wildlife, and the mysterious river Ore, with its fascinating history and legends and from where the oysters you are likely to eat are grown.

We think you'll love

  • Wandering down to the quay, buying your breakfast bread or croissants from the bakery, coming back to sit in the garden and relish the peace
  • Eating some seriously good local food at the restaurants and pubs surrounding you
  • The space and stillness of the cottage, which seems to absorb the light from the marshes

Reviews

A perfect place to stay, in the perfect location. Thanks Jodie for all the small and special touches that made The Curious Oyster such a gorgeous retreat. We had lovely weekend - sun burn in Feb! and and unforgettable encounter with a barn owl, out hunting by Butley Creek. A magical wonderful break. Thank you!

Sarah and Paul

Orford is an exquisite little village perched on the rim of the coast. It has everything an ancient English village should have and more, and in the immediate area has so many cultural, foodie, historical, musical and wildlife delights.

Location

The neighbourhood

The village square is a short stumble and has a medieval inn, the award-winning bakery and also the owners' fish restaurant, The Butley Orford Oysterage. A quarter of a mile down the street will bring you to the quay, a genuine smugglers' pub and more cafés. A ten minute drive will take you to Snape Maltings with its restaurants and pubs, then Aldeburgh and Thorpeness.
