The Experience

All bedrooms are on the ground floor and the living spaces above, to make the most of the fabulous A-frame beam which divides the living space from the kitchen and dining room. Relax on a huge sofa or soft armchairs in front of the wood-burner, or use the cushioned window seat for a quiet read. There are games and cards for wet weather days, a super dining room for convivial meals, a kitchen with all the kit you might need and lots of colourful artwork with a bird or botanical theme.

All the bedrooms are lovely and light with thick mattresses and robes, feather duvets, pretty fabric blinds, cool mirrors and good lighting. The master suite is massive and has its own doors to the garden and the bathrooms are scented with soaps and lotions from Bamford.

On warm days you’ll be in the garden with its wrap-around lawn and mature trees. Light the barbecue and wander over to the pub while you’re waiting – or just choose to eat there.

Reviews

A lovely old barn conversion in a small village and right next to a superb pub, so if you don't want to self-cater it's a short hop to local ales, craft gin and some seriously good food. On rainy days you'll be very happy snuggled up under the high beams in the beautiful sitting room by the wood-burner.

Location

The neighbourhood

The village is small, with a few old houses, a pretty church and The Duncombe Arms, where you can eat fabulous pub classics and some unusual modern British, all locally sourced. They have a craft gin list, their own ale and a huge wine list too. Walk or cycle it off on footpaths of varying lengths from the door - one which takes you to Calwich Abbey. You're in between Ashbourne and Uttoxeter.

Local points of interest from James Oddy

  • The local area is renowned for the walking, most notably in the Peak District. Discover sparkling river valleys, rolling green fields and flourishing wildlife on many of the trails available
  • Chatsworth House has more than 30 rooms and one of Europe’s most significant art collections to explore and is just 40 minutes away
  • Croxden Abbey is reputed to be where the worst King of England dies, King John. The Abbey is the finest monastic ruin in Staffordshire and is an excellent place to explore for all ages
  • Haddon Hall, built between the 12th and 17th centuries, sits in Elizabethan terraced gardens overlooking the River Wye and has been described as ‘the most perfect English House to survive from the Middle Ages’. It is also just 45 minutes away
  • The nearby towns of Ashbourne and Leek bristle with independent antique shops, specialist art galleries and craft boutiques clustered around their market squares and on their high streets
