The Experience

Ethan Davids and his team have nailed the relaxed, informal country feel with exposed brick walls, slate floors, rustic tables and pretty fabrics. The bar, pleasant and chatty, functions perfectly with bright, on-the-ball staff at the helm. As for the food, Jamie McDougall gives traditional pub food a glorious twist and all the ingredients are West Country or as near as possible. Pizza lovers can delve into some hand-stretched delights from Nole pizzas in the old skittles alley – now converted into a lovely space.

Bedrooms above the pub have the most character with arched windows, window seats and some exposed brick and stonework; those in the courtyard have a more modern feel but all are charming and thoughtful, beds are plump, homemade cookies are waiting.

Lovely to walk the hills all day then return here for a jolly good supper and a restful night. In summer you can enjoy a tipple on the lawn with views of the church.

Reviews

Chickpea Pubs have done a fabulous job in breathing new life into this striking 17th-century village pub, close to Bruton, Glastonbury, and the Mendip Hills for breezy walks. Rooms are simple, cosy and stylish, the best are above the pub and two have roll-top tubs. Sup a pint of Otter by the fire in the traditional, hop-adorned bar and tuck into some delicious pub food or an excellent Nole pizza.
