The Experience

Each plywood wall is etched with drawings that describe the stories of Watchet’s past, present and future, from the steam railway to paper making, to the legend of the Gurt Wurm, Watchet’s notorious local dragon. All the artwork is by illustrator Isabelle Mollé and the space is finished off with a ladder from the construction hanging from the ceiling.

The ground floor has a double bedroom (separated from the living space by a curtain), a kitchen which has all you need for basic cooking or heating up, and a bathroom with loo and shower. Upstairs on a mezzanine level there’s another double bed and space for two camp beds if needed. There’s a Smart TV for grim weather days and comfy seating by the window with a view over the town.

Wander down to art galleries, a restaurant serving breakfast, lunches, afternoon teas with home-baked cakes and suppers – all from local ingredients. Or just eat fish and chips on the harbour wall and gaze.

This place is one of our Sawday’s Community Champions – not-for-profit organisations receiving subsidised Sawday’s membership as recognition for their support of causes and communities.

Location

The neighbourhood

In the town you'll find several shops, pubs and an enclosed harbour - this is an ancient port, once very important, now a bit sleepier. You can easily reach the Quantock Hills, Exmoor National Park and the South West Coast Path for magnificent walking and cycling. A good deli, Sam's, is great for stocking up, there's a market on Wednesdays and the West Somerset Railway line runs through the town.

Local points of interest from Rebecca Tomkinson

  • Watchet is a lively coastal town full of history, beautiful quirky buildings, and stunning scenery. From markets and music festivals to steam trains, carnivals, and fireworks, Watchet is brimming with exciting events all year round!
  • East Quay is an arts centre of galleries, local artists' studios, an ethical shop, and cafe/restaurant. We frequently host a variety of events and workshops, so please make sure to check the 'What's On' page of our website!
  • East Quay is only a ten-minute walk from two different beaches, one of which is perfect for rock pooling and fossil hunting. (Visitors often unearth some of the earliest fossil ammonites recorded in Britain!)
