The Experience

On the village edge with lawns and green fields unfolding beyond – dogs will love it. This smart honey-hued country house is a superb Somerset base. Castle Cary, Sherborne and Wells are all close. For a taste of fine dining, try Michelin-star Osip in Bruton then wander around the gallery and gardens at Hauser & Wirth. Sample local cider at The Newt, or drive to the Jurassic Coast in an hour.

Back at base, the house lends itself to convivial living. Open your hamper of local goodies from Teals farm shop and cook together in the modern kitchen with all the kit you need. On warm days you’ll spill outside to eat on the terrace then light the wood-burner and play board games or read in the comfy living room.

The Corton Denham to Cadbury Castle loop starts from the door and takes in an Iron Age hillfort. Return to sleep well in upstairs bedrooms — two are en suite plus you get a family bathroom, two downstairs loos and a utility room.

Location

The neighbourhood

The Queens Arms is a five-minute drive for a meal in the restaurant or a drink on the sunny patio. If you like what's in your hamper, pop to Teals farmshop on the other side of the A303 for more; they stock lots of lovely local produce, run a butcher and deli, and a café and restaurant. Castle Cary is 10 minutes in the car for more cafés and independent shops to browse including a really good bookshop.

Local points of interest from Francesca Rathbone

  • The Camelot Arms is a cosy local pub situated just a 5-minute walk from the property. Or you can try the Queens Arms pub (a favourite of ours) which is just a 5-minute drive offering excellent food and a lovely pub garden.
  • You can pick up fresh, locally-grown produce at the nearby farm shop - Teals - where you’ll also find an excellent cafe, deli butchery and wine shop.
  • The charming villages of Bruton and Castle Cary are just a 12-minute drive, boasting boutique shops and artisan cafes. The iconic country estate, The Newt, is also just a 10-minute drive.
  • Discover the renowned Hauser & Wirth gallery just in Bruton, dine at the Michelin star Osip restaurant or enjoy a spot of shopping at Shepton Mallet’s outlet centre.
  • A little further afield, you can explore the picturesque village of Sherborne or Frome which are just 20 minutes away. Shop for goodies at the famous Frome Market (open every first Sunday of the month).
  • The legendary Glastonbury is around a 30-minute drive. Walkers will be in heaven too, with so many wonderful trails right on the doorstep.
