The Experience

The Phillips family has been at the helm for many years now. As for the inn, having begun its life in the 14th century, it rambles charmingly inside as well as out. Enter a world of blazing log fires, soft brick walls, oak panelling and quarry-tiled floors. Dried flowers hang from beams, herbs sit in vases, and blackboards trumpet good food made from scratch in the kitchen – an à la carte menu, pub classics, pub tapas and daily specials.

Colourful, floral bedrooms are upstairs. Just go easy on the ale before you open the door: some have swings hanging from the oak beams. Lounge on antique beds – large, comfortable and wrapped in lavender-scented sheets. Wander out to the beautiful gardens with a pint from the Three Tuns Brewery – admire Henry’s herbs, hundreds of spring bulbs and glorious herbaceous borders.

Enjoy endless lovely walks through some of the most spectacular scenery in the UK, return to much comfort and jolly good food.

Reviews

Imbued by the personality and passion of the Phillips family since 1986, this mellow, creeper-clad red-brick inn is a jumble of all ages and stands in wonderfully luxuriant gardens, where guests are invited the wander at their leisure before. Quirky, individually styled rooms are inspired by the garden and produce from the kitchen garden enhances the imaginative menus. A great all-round inn.

David, Sawday's Inspector

Having been startled, enchanted and deeply impressed by the pub's extraordinary garden, we sailed back into the Hundred House in the best possible mood for dinner. Across the room from us was a small party of mature hedonists, so the room was filled with good humour from the start. When our lovely waitress, Netty, arrived she added a welcome touch of old-fashioned kindness and courtesy. Our food was delicious, a wide-ranging mix of choices served with a keen eye for aesthetics. The pub richly deserves its place in Sawday's, not least for the overall sense of warmth one feels upon entering.

An enchanting hotel with the most amazing food. Had a two night stay this weekend in a beautiful, spacious, comfy room overlooking the garden. We ate at the hotel both nights, first night tacos from the street food menu, wonderful fresh flavours and succulent meat cooked outside in the garden. Second evening we had the three course meal in the restaurant. Once again wonderful fresh flavours, great service, lovely atmosphere. The gardens at the hotel were beautiful, open to guests. Fresh herbs and vegetables grown for use in the restaurant.

We had a really lovely few nights at the Hundred House Hotel. It is a relaxed and friendly place, where you are left to your own devices to wander around the comfortable rooms and beautiful gardens and enjoy the delicious food. When we needed anything, staff were on hand and very efficient, but never intrusive. Covid 19 cleaning and distancing measures were in place, but everything was well set up so that they didn't spoil your stay. Highlight: getting a chance to feed Pegasus the donkey, my son absolutely loved it!!

Location

The neighbourhood

Walkers and cyclists will be in paradise, but a visit to Ironbridge Gorge with its steep-sided, densely wooded hills and awesome industrial legacy is appealing. Stock up with Shropshire-grown and reared goodies at Apley Farm Shop and Café, hop on a steam train at the Severn Valley Railway, visit Weston Park or Stokesay Castle for culture and history, explore the sleepy market town of Much Wenlock.

Local points of interest from Jo Phillips

  • Ironbridge Gorge is one of the most dramatic landmarks in the region - if not the whole country.
  • Stock up with Shropshire grown and reared goodies from the butchery, deli, pantry and bakery at this excellent farm shop on the Apley Estate.
