The Experience
This 17th-century coaching inn has a delightful setting in the heart of a historic Cotswold village, with the babbling Windrush River just a stone’s throw away.
A cool young team run this rather posh pub. Good food is sourced locally and freshly cooked in a modern British style, and drinks are taken seriously: an ever-growing choice of gins, a beer menu with craft and world beers, an excellent choice of whiskies and wines by the glass. Continental breakfast (berry compote, mini croissants and fresh smoothies) are waiting on the table in the morning; cooked breakfast includes full English, smashed avocado on toast, eggs Benedict or any way you want. Coffee is roasted locally.
Several walks from the door take in the peaceful countryside. It’s a four-minute drive to the pretty town of Burford, which has boutiques brimming with antiques, art and gifts. Stow-on-the-Wold and Bourton-on-the Water are 20 minutes away, Oxford is 30 minutes and Cheltenham is about a 40-minute drive.

A great stay! We loved the selection of gins and enjoyed sampling a few new ones. The hospitality and food (especially the venison) was excellent. We'll be back!

Location
The neighbourhood
The setting is glorious in the centre of the small Cotswold village of Asthall, which dates back to the 12th century. The Elizabethan manor house, Asthall Manor, dominates the entrance to the village and there are pretty walks past the manor house and church, or across fields on many footpaths.
We really enjoyed our stay. Dining in the garden (in the sunshine) was a pleasure and the food was lovely (we shared a fish board).
