The Experience
Free-range bantams strut in the garden, a pint of Hooky waits at the bar. This lovely old pub sits on the river Windrush with the village cricket pitch waiting beyond. It started life as a water mill and stands on the Devonshire estate, hence the pictures of the Mitford sisters that hang on the walls. Outside, wisteria wanders across golden stone and creepers blush red in the autumn sun. Interiors hit the spot: low ceilings, open fires, beautiful windows, stone walls. Over the years thirsty feet on their way to the bar have worn grooves into ancient flagstones (including those of prime ministers and French presidents). As for the food, seasonal menus brim with local produce, offering delicious delights, perhaps game terrine with pear chutney, roast partridge with a red wine jus, rhubarb and apple crumble. Bedrooms in the old forge have 15th-century walls and 21st-century interior design; those in the cottage across the lane are yards from the river. Expect crisp linen, comfy beds, warm colours and good art. Several have claw-foot baths, one has a pink chaise longue. Burford is close.

A lovely location on the banks of the Swinbrook river and a beautiful spot to escape to. Everything was comfortable and immaculate; we had a wonderful sleep on our super comfy bed. Friendly helpful staff and very good pub food as well as good wine. The cheeseburger and the steak and onion pie were the best I remember having anywhere. Great value for money, we can't wait to return.

We stayed in the beautifully refurbished cottage overlooking the river and fields. Very comfortable and peaceful. We ate in the pub - excellent dinner both nights, with varied menus. Also very good breakfast, joined by chickens from the garden

A delightful Cotswold's pub where we had a very enjoyable lunch and we were looked after by a warm and friendly team. The food was tasty and well-presented.
