The Experience

A 17th-century inn around the corner from Blenheim Palace, with beautifully restored bedrooms. Wood floors sweep from side bar to main bar to dining room, burners in brick fireplaces belt out heat and the set menu is a steal. Smiling staff ferry own-brewed ales to locals, dog walkers and drinkers; the rest are here for the fabulous food – it’s fine dining in a relaxed atmosphere.

The pub won three stars from the Soil Association for its commitment to organic food but you’ll also find a wide selection of organic wines. There’s a nifty choice of malt whiskies, or try a pint of something locally-brewed in the garden.

Bedrooms are upstairs and down all have original art, handmade sturdy beds and the softest linen. Muted tartan blankets keep you warm and there are organic soaps and roll top baths.

Reviews

The Killy was a delightful experience and the food was sublime. The head chef, Adam, has created a superb menu, full of organic ingredients. Our bedroom, in the adjoining stable block, was comfortable (complimentary sherry and bottled water was a nice touch).

Location

The neighbourhood

It's a rural spot, surrounded by fields on the outskirts of a pretty village called Wootton. If you're staying at the pub you get a discount for a tour of Blenheim Palace. Visit the formal gardens, two cafés and a smart restaurant in the orangery. There's even a steam train ride and adventure park for children. Woodstock is also nearby, a friendly market town where you can see Chaucer's house.

Local points of interest from Claire & Jim Alexander

  • Sir Winston Churchill used to prop up the bar at 'The Killy' when he resided at Blenheim Palace round the corner. Stay with us and get cheaper tickets to the palace & grounds which are right on our doorstep!
  • Independently owned and fiercely so for 12 years by the Alexanders. Foodie heaven with consistent Michelin Guide Recommendations & 3 AA Rosettes. Current Top UK Gastropub list and recommended in The Good Food Guide too! Tasting menus & a la carte available
  • The pub is perfectly placed for Oxfordshire AND the Cotswolds. Have a cultural day out in Oxford, splurge at Bicester Village & Daylesford or tour the gorgeous Cotswold stone villages.
  • Driving route - we've created the perfect driving route that takes you all round the Cotswold hotspots (see on our website) from Diddly Squat and Stow on the Wold to Broadway Tower and back! It's an amazing route with some real hidden gems!
  • Celebrities - we have actors and celebrities visiting all the time - from Star Wars and Mr Bean to politicians (eek!) and Eastenders!! But all mingle with the locals and farmers for the perfect pub atmosphere!
  • Two dog friendly rooms (3&4). All bedrooms are in the adjoining stable block so best of both worlds - the buzz of the pub then peace next door in your bedroom.
