The Experience

The house was once owned by the de Montfort family, with water gardens providing a most romantic setting. The Browns have added solar panels too. Traditional, comfortable bedrooms in your own part of the house have views, slippers and sofas. From the grand wood-panelled hall enter a beamed dining room with high-backed chairs, brass rubbings, wood-burner and pretty 12th-century arch.

Breakfast will set you up for a day walking or exploring: homemade muesli, bacon from pigs just up the road, homegrown tomatoes, field mushrooms and eggs, vegan and vegetarian options. Wander the gardens and admire the house, which is a historic building – lovers of history will be absorbed.

Oxford Park & Ride is nearby, there’s walking from the door and delightful Christine has wangled you a free glass of wine in the local pub if you walk to get there.

Reviews

What a lovely stay. The house and its history is extraordinary. Ranging from 1140 and sympathetically restored. Christian is a warm and friendly host. Highly recommend.

Clarissa, Horsham

What a lovely manor house with crooked floors and original details - just lovely! The room and the bed are large and super comfy with all the amenities and a great bath. The breakfast is fresh and organic. Walking distance to lovely trails and the village of Ewelme a few steps away is just gorgeous. Highly recommended.

Steve, Toronto

A wonderful experience. The Waitrose offer was a lovely bonus, but we’d have happily strayed without it. Brilliant breakfast, great room, marvellous host. Much recommended

Nick, Hertfordshire

We enjoyed a lovely few days, a wonderful welcome from Christine. A lovely warm room, organic tea and coffee and herbal teas in room. Lovely bathroom with corner bath and expensive complimentary toiletries. Breakfast was first class and Christine talked about where to visit and gave us information to help our visit. Thank you Christine.

Christine, Leicestershire

We had a lovely few days at Fyfield Manor. Our room was very comfortable and quiet and Christine made us feel very welcomed and relaxed. Breakfast was superb and the location was ideal for visiting Oxford, Henley and Dorchester. Strongly recommend.

Fascinating house with great panelling and mediaeval arches, a very interesting place to stay with a great history. The dining room with large table, said to be the oldest in Oxfordshire (1190) with brass rubbings and historic archway makes an atmospheric place for a great breakfast. Fascinating house with great panelling and mediaeval arches, a very interesting places to stay with great.

Jan, Sawday's Inspector

Enjoyed a wonderful stay at Fyfield Manor, which is a magnificent house with beautiful rooms surrounded by countryside. Christine is a most welcoming and helpful host - providing great local info, places to visit, maps for walks etc. Delicious breakfasts and the local bacon was the best we'd tasted! Both evenings we walked to local pubs and enjoyed excellent food at The Shepherd's Hut and The Crown. Altogether a relaxing and special stay at Fyfield and we would most definitely love to return!

Helen, Hook

An absolutely delightful stay in a welcoming fascinating home. It’s a very rare opportunity to stay in a home that looks as though it could be cared for by our treasured National Trust.

Elise, Rugby

We had a terrific stay at Fifield Manor. A warm welcome, elegant spacious room, fascinating house with many unique features, delicious breakfasts and Christine was extremely helpful.

Paul, Boughton Monchelsea

Christine has created a magnificent home and garden in the pretty Oxfordshire countryside. She provides a luxurious room and bathroom. The breakfast was delicious - with organic and locally sourced produce. Christine provides detailed information on walks, places of interest and places to eat. She takes good care of you and is ready to share the history of her lovely home. One night was simply not enough!

Sarah

Everything Sawday's guide said was spot on. The welcome was very friendly, my (single ) room was v spacious in an 18th c room with a v good en suite bathroom. V good breakfast and Christine couldn't have been more helpful and charming. And the sound of her daughter playing the piano drifting through the oak-panelled walls....

Location

The neighbourhood

This is gentle countryside and you can walk to pubs in 10 minutes - The Shepherd's Hut or The Crown. It's just one mile to the bus stop for Oxford and buses run every 30 minutes. Wallingford is an interesting town, steeped in history with a good tea room and plenty of shops. You're near to plenty of NT houses and gardens, or join the Thames Path for a mix of country and town walking.

Local points of interest from Christine Brown

  • Perfectly situated to visit a variety of national trust houses many within 10 to 30 minute drive
  • A 5 minute walk to the historic village of Ewelme dating back to the 14th century. The medieval school is still in full use.. Scenes from Les Miserables were filmed in the beautiful church.
  • Positioned right in the centre of Midsomer murder country. Follow the trail of your favourite episode and stop off for lunch at 'The Six Bells' where many a murderer has had a pint.
  • A 15 minute drive to the Oxford Park and Ride or even better take the local bus from the village directly to the city centre. Explore the beautiful buildings and dine in one of the amazing bargain restaurants. A vibrant and exciting city .
  • Wonderful walking from the door. Turn left at the gate for the Chiltern hills and right for the river.
  • Spoilt for pubs and restaurants. Two excellent pubs to walk to and a selection of 'special' restaurants within a short drive.
