The Experience
The journey up here is half the adventure, going slow is the key and you should start to wind down as the views get better the higher you climb. Terri and Matthew have created a wonderful cluster of holiday homes on what was once a monastery (there is still an extraordinarily spiritual vibe up here) and then a school for local farmers’ children. The history is palpable.
Inside is scrupulously shiny and modern with leather sofas and a big TV screen so if it rains you’ll stay cosy inside. The kitchen is sleek with granite work surfaces, space for prepping and a big fridge so you don’t have to stock up too often. A thoughtful welcome hamper is full of local treats including Northumberland biscuits, chocolates from Choc Affair in Yorkshire and some English fizz.
Stride the hills along ancient sheep paths, sit in your own garden admiring the views and looking out for red squirrels, or having a barbecue on long summer evenings.

What a fantastic holiday retreat Hemmel is. Kidlandlee have taken care of everything you need for your holiday stay with your dog. Such amazing views, well worth the drive up. For us it ticked all our boxes for an ideal getaway. A perfect base from which to explore this part of Northumberland, its rich history and amazing beaches. We will certainly return.

Had the Hemmel on my places to go list for over a year and managed to snag a visit this weekend as a late 50th birthday treat. The pictures do not do this place justice, to say it feels like you are in a world of your own is an understatement. The cottage is very well presented and equipped, even washing up wasn’t an issue as the view whilst doing so was amazing. Walks around property are great for all levels of fitness, unless like us you make a wrong turn on the blue route and end up at the bottom of the hill with a big hike back up but we needed the exercise. We will be back!

Amazing accommodation and setting. The 3 mile track up to the cottage is an adventure in itself (bit rough) but is well worth it! The Hemmel is top notch finished to a very high standard and the quality of the equipment, furniture and furnishings is second to none. There are fabulous walks in the area and some great walks on forestry commission tracks straight from the accommodation. Some public footpaths are still shut because of damage from storms. If you want a remote holiday with great views and fab accommodation then book The Hemmel.

The Hemmel possibly has one of the best hill top panoramic views available. Hence our second visit to this fabulous place but this time for two weeks! The accommodation is 5 star, well thought through & lacks nothing that you may need. Our two dogs throughly enjoyed the fantastic walks around the estate and further afield of which there are many and varied suiting all types. The location is off the beaten track which is why The Hemmel and Kidlandlee has a special following. Terri, Matthew and their team are first class; nothing too much trouble. Already booked for next year - think view!

In every single way The Hemmel surpasses itself, the accommodation is spotless. Terri, Matthew and the team take pleasure in ensuring a stay here is everything that you could want, the welcome pack is a wonderful addition and as you make your way up the 3.5 mile track the anticipation of what you might find at the top is not a disappointment. A stay at Kidlandlee soothes your soul, time is easily lost absorbing the hillside views and if you can tear yourself away from that then a treatment in 'The Cabin' with Catherine only adds to your enjoyment. Fantastic people, fantastic place.

This is our second stay at The Hemmel and it was just as special as the first. The moment you walk in the door you immediately relax, which is also helped by a treatment with Catherine at The Cabin. We would also recommend using the star gazing kit that can be used upon request. Our first night was the perfect night for it and it was great fun to look up at the stars and watch the moon come over the hill. We are already discussing our next stay and can’t wait to return! Thank you very much to Terri, Matthew and the great team at Kidlandlee

We’ve just returned from another amazing weekend staying in The Hemmel at Kidlandlee, the fact that this was our third visit in a year should tell you something… We have found a little piece of heaven on earth nestled in the heart of the Northumberland National Park and hidden beneath the UK’s largest ‘Dark Sky’! The accommodation is perfect; clean and modern with traditional touches as well as some thoughtful treats in a lovely welcome pack. We enjoyed winter walks, cosy evenings by the fire and stargazing 🤩🔭 making good use of the new Stargazing Kit!

A gem! A genuine 5-star cottage lacking in nothing and with views that are truly spectacular. The owners have spared no expense to ensure visitors have a memorable holiday with its high quality furnishings and fittings through to the superior welcoming gifts. We have stayed in numerous holiday cottages over many years and it is rare to come across this standard. A deserved winner.

You'll feel very private here, with lovely views facing nothing but the rugged countryside and hills. Look out for the red squirrels who come to feed, walk, cycle (tough getting back but grand views), bring all you need and hunker in. It will suit anybody who loves nature and the great outdoors.

Location
The neighbourhood
This is Border country in the upper Coquet Valley - famous for reivers, Romans and rivers. Walking and cycling through Kidland forest is superb. The nearest village is Alwinton which has a small pub, Harbottle has a good village pub which also serves as a shop and Pizzeria La Stella. The nearest bigger place is Rothbury, a nice little market town with some independent shops.
Local points of interest from Terri & Matthew Stock
- Visit Craigside House! A wonderful day out for the whole family and doggies too. Building camps in the woods, nature trails, kayaking and canoeing on the lake. Beautiful gardens and house full of local history and inventions. Our favourite place to go!
- For Harry Potter fans! Alnwick Castle is a fantastic day out for all the family. Learn about the history of Alnwick and enjoy the beautiful award-winning gardens created by The Duchess of Northumberland. Activities, concerts and magical fun!
- Barter Books is one of the biggest second-hand book stores in the country. Great for rainy days. Preserved beautifully it is located in the old Alnwick Train Station. Sit, read and relax with a cuppa in restored waiting rooms with open fires. Dogs welcome
- Holy Island and the Farne Islands are a great day out. Spot seals and puffins as you travel by boat. Visit the home of Grace Darling, Longstone Light House and find out how her amazing courage inspired the first life boats to patrol our shores.
- The Star Inn in Harbottle is loved by guests for its warm welcome and is at the heart of our community. You can dine in or pick up a take away on your way back to the cottage. It's dog friendly too so you can take them with you.
- The Rose and Thistle Pub is just at the bottom of the valley and if you're feeling up to it you can walk there have a Sunday roast and walk back again. Offering a different menu to The Star Inn it is dog friendly and well worth a visit.

Introducing
Terri & Matthew Stock
Terri and Matthew moved to Kidlandlee Estate from Kent in 2017 with their children and two Labradors. Matthew had a renovation business which he has put to good use on the cottages and buildings, and Terri was a stage manager in the theatre in London for a number of years. They hope their guests enjoy the peace and tranquillity, have fun exploring the hills, valleys and beaches and totally unwind during their stay.
Fantastic from start to finish. A wonderful 20 minute drive up to the property after leaving the main road. The property was everything we could have hoped for and more. The views were to die for too. Despite torrential rain for two days out of the four we had clear skies on the first and last night, when to our amazement we were blessed with a fantastic show from the northern lights which went on all evening. We were on top of the world and the experience can only be described as being out of this world. No surprise then to discover that Hemel means Heaven. It was.
