The Experience
The building’s timber frame and cladding give a black barn effect and there’s a calm, spacious feel within. An open-plan living space has comfy seating, a smart TV, books and games so plenty to occupy you if the weather is grim. On sunny days you can spread out into your own garden (safely fenced for dogs) with views over the countryside, a firepit and barbecue – lovely for long al fresco suppers.
The kitchen has all the gear you’ll need to cook up a storm, there’s room for those who want to help and you’re left a bottle of the owners’ favourite wine or local beers, freshly ground coffee, homemade cake, North chocolates, dairy milk, crisps and free-range eggs. Two double bedrooms have roomy beds (one can be a twin), smart en suite bathrooms and French windows leading to the garden – there’s a little single with a pull-out bed too.
It’s just a mile to a pub and a well-stocked village shop at Lowick, and a 15-minute drive to the spectacularly long sandy beach and imposing castle at Bamburgh.

What an absolute treat. A week away in a lovely part of UK and a stay in a most comfortable house. The setting was absolutely beautiful with views to stir the soul. The rooms were excellently appointed; luxurious without being pretentious. Our hostess had provided a lovely welcome pack which was most appreciated after a long journey. Although we felt, due to the peace and quiet, that we were miles from anybody, we were only minutes from trunk roads, so everything was easily accessible. We can't wait to make a return stay.

A very spacious, airy, beautifully decorated cottage with a warm and welcoming feeling – and two extremely friendly and caring hosts. I felt totally relaxed as soon as I walked in and wished I could have stayed longer!

Location
The neighbourhood
Findara is down a private road and surrounded by trees and fields full of wildlife – walks and cycles beckon. Berwick is a 15-minute drive for a choice of shops and places to eat, as is Bamburgh which has a very good butcher – famous for his sausages. There are castles to admire, some stunning beaches, golf courses and impressive National Trust properties including Belsay, Wallington and Cragside.
Local points of interest from Lydia Achard
- Drive the causeway to Holy Island and stop for coffee and cake at Pilgrims Coffee House.
- Book a surfing lesson at Bamburgh Beach.
- Visit the puffins and grey seals on a boat trip to the Farne Islands.
- Venture to the fishing village of Craster to sample the famous kippers.
- Take a visit to the Ford & Etal, a working estate. Here you can ride a steam train, stroke a heavy horse and learn how the power of water is harnessed to produce flour.
- Daytrip to Cragside, set in beautiful grounds that extend over 1,000 acres. This National Trust attraction was built in the late Victorian period for Lord and Lady Armstrong and offers visitors an insight into contemporary Victorian domestic life.

Introducing
Lydia Achard
Lydia and Arthur live in the main house and do B&B from the other wing. They bought the property just before 2020 and set about restoring it, project managing the entire thing and doing much of the work themselves. Lydia was in interior design and travel, Arthur works in the music industry. They are friendly, caring people and look after guests perfectly.
