The Experience
Country walks from your door take you to The Drake Stone, a mythical meeting place for Druids with views of the medieval ruins of Harbottle Castle. Carry on to Clennell Street, a truly ancient trackway and historic Drovers Road through the Cheviot Hills that crosses the border to Scotland, or visit the Lady’s Well in Holystone where St Ninian is reputed to have baptised early Christians.
Back at the cottage there’s a wood-burner to warm up in front of and a smart TV with basic Sky package and books and games to keep everyone entertained. The country kitchen’s easy to work in, there’s room for six around the slate-topped table and another wood-burner keeps it all cosy. Take your nightcap out to the pavement bench to gaze at starry skies.
For meals out, The Star Inn, just over the lane next door, serves wood-fired oven based pizza and pastas, steaks from the Argentine grill and more. There’s also a well stocked shop for all the essentials, fresh fruit and veg, and newspapers. For more places to eat and shops the towns of Thropton and Rothbury are a 15 minute drive.

Lovely cottage - obviously recently done out, very clean and modern. Slightly smaller than the photos made it look who h isn't a problem, just slightly less storage than anticipated. Owner of the cottage was absolutely lovely and the most helpful host I've ever encountered, couldn't do enough for us.

A lovely cosy cottage with all of the required facilities set in a beautiful location. A generous welcome pack awaited us upon our arrival along with a very comprehensive information pack. The village has a recently renovated and very friendly pub serving a great selection of pizzas and pasta dishes. We hope to return again in the near future and wouldn't hesitate in highly recommending Bottle Cottage.

We enjoyed the property and the peace and quiet of Harbottle Village. There were plenty of games and activities to entertain ourselves and the kids on the days where the weather meant we were house-bound! Happy to recommend the new pizza and pasta oven opened up at the neighbouring pub - worth a visit!

We had an absolutely fantastic week at Bottle Cottage. The owners had thought of everything to ensure that it is a comfortable and welcoming place, with real attention to detail. All the fixtures, fittings and decoration are of a very high standard, with lovely touches such as a welcome basket, walking poles and logs for the fire. We especially loved the log burners when it turned a bit cooler in the evenings, and the lovely comfortable bedrooms. The kitchen is fully equipped for cooking family meals. Harbottle village is a really friendly place, with lots to see in the local area.

Absolutely incredible staycation...Bottle Cottage truly is a beauty. We were really impressed with all the little touches, and the cosy yet modern vibe of the cottage. The locals are friendly and the pub nextdoor is great for food as-well as drinks, offering pizzas baked in the stone oven - delicious. Alnwinton is just a short tree lined walk away and the views from the Drakestone walk are a must. Thank you for the so welcomed break, we will definitely be back!

This is a beautiful cottage in an absolutely stunning location, each morning i woke early and took the climb up to the Drake Stone just across the road and the view was just sensational! We were central for many day trips and when home at the cottage we had everything we needed and more. The goodie basket left for us was a wonderful surprise and made us feel really welcome. Beds were comfy and everything felt clean, homely and the decor tasteful and chic. Hope to come again some time!

Location
The neighbourhood
Harbottle is a sleepy village nestled in the Cheviot Hills in the Northumberland National Park AONB. There are walks for all levels from the door and the pub next door to the cottage (originally the bottling shop) sells bar snacks and newspapers. Bustling Rothbury is nine miles away and has everything you need to stock up and you also have easy access to the coast at Alnmouth, Bamburgh and Craster.
Local points of interest from Lorraine & Paul Dryden
- Expand your mind - visit Kielder Observatory to view vast dark sky stars and huge bright moon up close - infinite inspiration - booking essential.
- Pull on your walking boots and walk Windy Gyle and Border Ridge taking part of the Pennine Way, about 10 miles reaching 2,103 feet at its highest. The walk begins in the Upper Coquetdale Valley past Alwinton with stunning views over England and Scotland.
- For a shorter less strenuous walk from your door, head up to the Drake Stone, a circular walk with expansive views. At the foot of the forest path, decide whether to turn right for home, or left to head to The Rose & Thistle in Alwinton for replenishment!
- Centrally placed to explore Hadrian’s Wall, it’s Roman forts and archeology, Corbridge and Hexham in the West, and the beautiful beaches of the Northumberland Coast, Alnwick Castle & Gardens (of Harry Potter fame) and quaint fishing villages in the East.
- Harbottle used to have its own brewery with Bottle Cottage the original bottling plant. The Star Inn over the lane serves a good pint and food - pizza baked in a wood-fired oven, pasta and seafood dishes outdoors and in. Exposed stone walls & logburners
- Discover the delights of Hepple Gin - produced 6 miles up the valley in Hepple using Juniper Berries harvested from the Estate moorlands and hills. They call it high fidelity gin. Find in local/national restaurants and Tully’s Delicatessen in Rothbury.

Introducing
Lorraine & Paul Dryden
Lorraine and Paul Dryden love the rurality of the village, finding it the perfect place to kick back and relax after a busy day. They love the dark skies and the countryside walks from the doorstep yet being close enough to shops and restaurants in the market towns and villages nearby. Lorraine and Paul have two holiday lets in Northumberland and are experienced in looking after guests from arrival: brimming hamper, wood-burners set ready to light and comfortable beds.
What a charming cottage in the heart of Northumberland. Lorraine and Paul were delightful and provided a generous welcome pack as well as giving us a great deal of information about the area. The house was immaculately clean, the beds extremely comfortable with lovely white bed linen, the kitchen was well equipped, and the sitting room very cosy. The pub next door which was both very friendly and provided excellent food, wine and beer. Harbottle is a great place to stay with Kielder Forest in one direction and the beautiful Northumberland coast in the other. We have booked for next year.
