Lost in the lanes of deepest Norfolk, an inn that’s hard to match. Outside, Georgian red-brick walls stand to attention at the front, but nip round the back and find them at ease in a beautiful courtyard where you can knock back a pint of Wherry in the evening sun before slipping inside to eat. Tim and Janie upped sticks from the Alps, unable to resist the allure of this lovely old inn. A sympathetic refurbishment has worked its magic, but the spirit remains the same: this is a country-house pub with lovely staff who go the extra mile. Downstairs the bar hums with happy locals who come for Norfolk ales and good French wines, while the food in the restaurant is as good as ever: Norfolk pheasant and rabbit terrine, wild duck or Cromer crab, treacle tart and caramel ice-cream. Upstairs, there’s a sitting room on the landing, then six pretty bedrooms. All have have smart carpets, wooden furniture, comfy beds and sparkling bathrooms. There’s masses to do: ancient Norwich, the coast at Cromer, golf on the cliffs at Sheringham, Blickling Hall, a Jacobean pile. Don’t miss Sunday lunch.
You must go here if you enjoy good food, well prepared from local produce. We had two excellent evening meals and delicious breakfasts too! Tim was very welcoming and was good enough to have blankets put on our beds rather than duvets (must remember to ask in the future at other places we go to stay). Spacious bathroom and local soaps, lotions and shampoos too! The Saracens Head is so quiet and peaceful, in the middle nowhere but central to so many places to go and visit. We hope to be back soonest....
