The Experience

Built in 1861, the house sits in a secluded rural setting. As well as your own private garden with table and chairs, you can wander the yew tree walk, follow a turf maze, find birdwatching hides and wildflower banks, take picnics to the river and watch sheep grazing in the field beside you – this is a peaceful spot.

Inside is just the right size for four with a lovely balance of old and new furniture, fine fabrics and plenty of seating, including a padded window seat for gazing. The wood-burner warms you in winter, there’s a separate dining room and a library (watch the low ceiling) with a desk if you need to work. The kitchen has everything you need and you’re left a generous welcome pack with a freshly baked cake and a bottle of Easton sloe gin.

Both bedrooms have fine views and super bed linen on fat mattresses – they share a huge bathroom with bath and a walk-in rain shower; soaps and bathrobes await. Settle in and enjoy – garden lovers will be especially happy.

Reviews

The Head Gardener's House is very comfortable with good quality furniture and fixtures. The location and garden are very peaceful and a lovely place to relax for a few days.

Tracey, Worksop

Quite simply the best holiday cottage we have ever stayed in. Comfortable and cosy accommodation which has been furnished to a high standard. Fabulous location and easy to access the many tourist attractions in the surrounding area. The out of hours access to Easton Walled Gardens was a wonderful added bonus. Would highly recommend a stay here.

Louisa, Warrington

Really fabulous place. Lovely setting that made for a very relaxing stay. Would highly recommend.

Alan, Oxford

Hidden away in a quiet corner of the stunning Easton Estate I found this wonderful cottage that oozes quality, history and charm. With a secret door to the tranquil gardens I couldn't wait to wander through and take a glass of wine to the water's edge, watch the wildlife and forget the real world for a while.

Local points of interest from Sir Fred Cholmeley

  • We are an easy drive from many parts of the UK - just over 100 miles from each of London, Cheltenham, Manchester and York

  • FD Roosevelt (32nd President of the United States) and his wife, Eleanor, spent their honeymoon at Easton Hall, as guests of the Cholmeley Family.
  • The lovely market towns of Stamford and Oakham are within easy driving distance, as is Rutland Water. See Our Local Guide on our website for more things to do and see when staying with us.
  • The Head Gardener's House was built in 1861 and was home to many of Easton Hall's Head Gardeners, until the latter was pulled down in 1951.

Introducing

Sir Fred Cholmeley

Generations of Cholmeleys have managed The Easton Estate in Lincolnshire since 1561. Sir Fred and his wife, keen to introduce guests to the beauty and tranquillity of country life, have been running their Walled Gardens as a visitor attraction since the early 2000s. They live on The Easton Estate, and have holidayed in their Norfolk Yellow House since 2004 too.
