The Experience

Such a merry place to walk into with lots of art on the walls and a big wood-burner to gather around. Sunlight pours in and there are views to the Black Mountains tempting you out for blissful walks. The higgledy-piggledy handmade kitchen is part of the open-plan set up so great for sociable cooks, and you’ll find all the basics you need to create meals (oil, salt, pepper, herbs etc.) along with fresh eggs from the chickens when they’re laying.

The big double bedroom feels warm and cosy in spite of its size and it has a contemporary en suite wet room with big overhead shower. Older children will be fine zipping up the ladder to the mezzanine bedroom with two singles. Book the Finnish wood-fired sauna up ahead for easing walk-weary limbs, or lie in the hammock under an ancient oak admiring the views.

The feel is remote, walking or cycling will be sublime but you’re only 20 minutes away from Hay-on-Wye for plenty of civilisation.

  • Staying put – bring all you need and walk your socks off all day, then hunker down by the wood-burner in the evening while something delicious simmers in the oven
  • Going to the pub – the best is The Bull's Head in Craswall (seven miles) and the food is exceptional – book ahead

Reviews

Arriving here felt like being welcomed into an artist's home, full of colour, curiosities and character. The beautiful views across the Black Mountains tempted us into long walks whatever the weather. Our evenings were spent around the wood-burner playing games, or better still trying out the real Finnish sauna – a treat for aching legs!

Location

The neighbourhood

A gorgeous setting with chickens pecking about outside and you can walk straight up into the hills from the door. The nearest pub is the Nags Head in Peterchurch (four miles) which is fine for a pint, and there's a village shop. Hopes in Longtown is an 18-minute drive. Here you'll find local wines and ciders, cheeses, ice cream and homemade cakes. Bibliophiles will make a beeline for Hay.
