The Experience

Step in to find a homely, cosy, light-filled space: logs in the burner, a shining dining table, a boot room for togs, and, from each window, dappled woodlands and vistas of trees.

Here you are, tucked into the woods, a ten-minute drive from Great Malvern. Take your coffee to the terrace and the bank of wild flowers. Climb to the ancient fort where Elgar wrote ‘Dream of Girontius’; gaze to Hay Bluff and the Black Mountains. A footpath runs right past your door, guiding you into the hills.

Follow the path to the lovely Chase Inn, for a pie, a pint and a glorious view. Trek across the Malverns, spotting buzzards on the wing. For Tudor houses and twee-free shops, set off for Ledbury, six miles: a delight. Or trot down the hill to the village (15 minutes), for shops, cafés and all you might need, including a train to Paddington. Then home for dinner, cards, and soft feathery duvets…and owls to hoot you to sleep.

Reviews

If you go down to the woods today you'll get a lovely surprise. Deep peace, a tinkling stream, masses of birdsong, great walking and cycling and a super pub you can walk to. Return to a very comfortable, warm cottage.

Location

The neighbourhood

You're alone in the woods yet close to everything, including The Chase Inn, for good food and sunsets - a 5-minute stroll - and Colwall village which is just down the hill. With footpaths running past the door and views to die for, the area is a hiker's and biker's dream. Malvern, 2 miles, is unmissable: shops, restaurants, theatre, a statue of Elgar, and 104 Victorian gas lamps.

Local points of interest from the Owner

  • The Cottage is equidistant between Malvern and Ledbury, so staying at Meris’s Cottage is an ideal starting point for exploration of the 3 Counties Worcestershire, Herefordshire and Gloucestershire. Walks through amazing countryside and over hills are literally on your doorstep.
  • Walking around Malvern, make sure you look up! The architecture is splendid, the grandeur of the once famous spa town is clearly evident. Great Malvern Priory, built in 1085, was originally built for 30-monks. During Henry VIII’s reign it was sold to the people of Malvern for £20.
  • Modern day Malvern has cafes, restaurants, a theatre, cinema, Waitrose and many independent shops, making present buying easy!
  • The famous composer, Edward Elgar is buried close by at St Wultstan’s RC Church in Little Malvern, not far from one of the few remaining gas lit streets in Europe. Always mystical, the lamps were thought to have inspired C.W. Lewis in his writings.
  • Half way between Meris’s Cottage and Ledbury is Eastnor Castle, built in 1820, with its own maze, arboretum, gardens and castle to explore - a great place for a family fun day.
  • Ledbury is the quintessential medieval market town steeped in history, but very much alive with an array of eateries, independent shops, galleries and easy parking.
