The Experience
The Lloyd family, sheep farmers up here in the Black Mountains for generations, have lavished attention on the restoration of their listed barn. The result is a really successful mix of old: stone, slate, beams, china, general rusticity and retro pieces – and new: an ultra-modern kitchen, bathroom, heating and electronic devices – touches of fun, splashes of vibrant colour. Long, wild views from deeply comfortable, woody bedrooms will entice you out to tramp those hills; return to soak in deep baths, or enjoy the power showers, then head down the wide oak stairs for a drink by the woodburning stove and dinner – perhaps prepared by Ali – though everything a cook could want is provided and this is a thoroughly foodie area. The Barn has lovely big garden for summer lounging. If you can tear yourself away, go to bookish Hay and to Abbey Dore for a concert, to Hereford market and to see the Cathedral and Mappa Mundi – a weekend is not enough!

Location
The neighbourhood
Local points of interest from Ali Lloyd
- Cothill is situated on a tranquil sheep farm in the glorious Golden Valley, at the foothill of the Black Mountains, a short distance from Hay on Wye, in the borderlands of England and Wales.
- With a footpath running from the front door, try a hearty walk over the hills into Hay on Wye, or for something gentler, visit one of the many ancient churches in easy walking distance.
- The area is foodie heaven - visit local cider makers, an award winning farm restaurant, watch ice cream being made or visit a splendid local pick your own farm.
- Visit one of the many fantastic food festivals in the area - Ludlow, Abergavenny, Hereford, Shobdon, the list goes on.
- Just 20 minutes away from Hay-on-Wye, known internationally for it's wonderful literary festival, this unique little market town also boasts a plentiful supply of book and antique shops too, plus great places to eat.
- Experience life on an upland hill farm - lambing, shearing, hay making and even a friendly farmer!

Where to start? Probably with the view from the beautiful garden overloo the tranquil Herefordshire countryside. No other houses for miles around to spoil the peace and quiet, the only noise is the grazing sheep, multitudes of birds and the odd distant tractor. The Stable is beautifully restored, each bedroom has character in plenty, the kitchen is great for communal eating, and there is a wonderful communal eating and bbq space outside (we were blessed with perfect midsummer weather). Add the games barn for family fun and this really is the perfect location for a family gathering. Perfection
