The Experience

The long, 17th-century building is set back from the road and has footpath access to the river Test. The bar and dining areas are relaxed and informal – the oldest part with low ceilings, chunky beams and a double-sided fireplace with a wood-burning stove. The main dining area is in a light and airy conservatory extension with doors to the terrace. Tuck in to a mix of traditional favourites and more inventive dishes – all ingredients sourced as locally as possible, including ‘chalk stream’ trout from the Test.

Bedrooms (six upstairs and six down) are all decorated in a similar style with supremely comfy beds, Porcelanosa bathrooms and Scottish Soap Company goodies. The downstairs bedrooms have their own private terraces with tables and chairs. Wake to a hearty home-cooked breakfast then head off to the river or for wonderful walks.

In summer you’ll be on the terrace, real ale in hand, enjoying the sunshine and choosing what to eat.

Reviews

Set in the beautiful Test Valley with direct footpath access to the famous chalk stream, The Duke is a smartly revamped and extended country inn providing a relaxing and comfortable base for exploring the New Forest and the cathedral cities of Winchester and Salisbury. Rooms are cosy and contemporary (dogs welcome) and food is freshly prepared combining classics with modern pub dishes.

Location

The neighbourhood

Apart from the walking (you can join the Test Way long-distance footpath) and fishing (you need to book this) there are plenty of places to explore. Stockbridge (nine miles) has some lovely independent shops and a good farm shop. Winchester and Salisbury have magnificent cathedrals and gardeners will adore Houghton Lodge Gardens or Mottisfont Abbey for roses. Romsey station is a three-minute taxi ride.
