The Experience

Around the core of a medieval timber-framed house, towering chimneys soar skywards and beds face the glorious gardens. Sophie and Ed make you feel at home – snuggle up on sofas around the roaring open fire with a tipple, or sit in the draped window seat with a book.

Princess Anne met Mark Phillips in the dining room – it’s here you’ll be served up scotch pancakes, herb and gruyere omelettes or sausages and bacon from home-reared pigs at a big oak table, also laden with muesli, toast and fruit.

Keep your eyes peeled for the bronze deer on your way to the bluebell woods, sit on a stone bench in the garden to drink in the peace, follow a two-mile trail to Alton. This is Jane Austen country; visit her home in nearby Chawton.

Location

The neighbourhood

Sweep through gates guarded by a lodge house and over the bumpy drive – the Grade II house sits in 90 acres of woodland and gardens, with lovely Hampshire spilling out all around. It’s a great stop off on the way south from London (40 minutes), or as an alternative to a soulless airport hotel, with Gatwick (one hour) and Heathrow (30 minutes) both close. Wonderfully quaint Winchester is a half-hour drive, the South Downs a little further. For suppers, Odiham’s Bel and the Dragon (two miles) does a good line in gastropub classics, while Hartley Wintney is stuffed with little cafes and restaurants.

It is one of the oldest houses in Hampshire, and was one of the most important Courts in Southern England at one time. There used to be a monastery in the grounds.
The garden and grounds are well established and the bluebell woods are spectacular in the spring.
Princess Anne met Mark Phillips over dinner in the dining room. Ed's father Michael, a five time Olympian event rider was part of the same team as the Princess Royal and they became good friends.
It has only ever belonged to four families. The Bullens are descendants of Anne Boleyn - King Henry VIII's second wife.
It is an ideal stop over for Royal Ascot, Windsor Horse Show, Farnborough Air Show.
Heathrow is 30 minutes away and Gatwick just under an hour.

Introducing

Sophie & Edward Bullen

Ed’s family have lived at Borough Court since the 1800s – Ed was born in the house and his father, a former Olympic event rider, still lives in a converted stable block on the estate. Now joined by Ed’s wife Sophie and their brood of five children (plus assorted Labradors, sheep, horses, chickens and ducks), the Bullens wish to share the history and magic of the house with others. Sophie runs the show and is talented at interior design while Ed works in the city.
