The Experience

Hidden in a rural, woodland valley, Newland sits on the edge of The Forest of Dean and the Wye Valley. It has a good pub, The Ostrich, for a drink or supper if you don’t fancy cooking, the walking is superb in all directions – Offa’s Dyke is close – and the river is only a few miles away.

The house, resplendent in coral pink, has been lavishly brought back to life by the owners. You stay in an open-plan apartment that feels like a luxury hotel room. Climb the outdoor spiral staircase and enjoy the steeple views of pretty Newland Church, tuck into the basket of goodies, and plan your trip. There are board games, WiFi and a Smart TV for rainy days, a neat kitchen, smart shower room and a cloud-comfy bed to fall into.

It’s five miles to Symonds Yat, hire kayaks and cruise down the Wye or potter around bustling Monmouth. And if you fancy a treat, there’s a Michelin star restaurant, The Whitebrook, a short drive away.

A real gem! The studio was immaculate and Neil had gone above and beyond. A lovely Christmas card, present and small tree with lights were waiting for us along with a welcome bottle of wine in the fridge, fresh coffee capsules, milk and a tray full of Sweet and savoury nibbles. Large fluffy white towels, constant hot water and a very cosy warm cosy studio with a super comfy bed. The accommodation is excellently equipped. I would highly recommend this studio set In a charming Gloucestershire village.

Graham, Leeds

Third time staying there, hopefully that tells you everything. Home from home. A magnificent peaceful retreat.

Richard, Dursley

We really enjoyed our stay at Steeple View - despite inclement weather, there were still many things to enjoy in the area and it was great having a lovely apartment to return to, or indeed spend the day in. We really enjoyed the eclectic mix of old and new and the botanical wall was beautiful. Everything was lovely and clean and the welcome treats were indeed welcoming.

This apartment was absolutely stunning, superb design, spotlessly clean, great location, very quiet. Host quick to respond. Everything you could possibly need was provided. Car parking right outside and a terrace area to sit opposite the property, we had two lovely meals in the local pub, easy walk from property. Everything we needed and more. So quiet sat out on the terraced area. Entering property all very straight forward, parking excellent. We had two meals in the pub which is lovely to walk to. Such a stunning property and location.

Mark, Royal Wootton Bassett

Had such an amazing bank holiday weekend at Neil and Raymond’s place! The place was spotless and the hosts literally thought of everything! Communication was great! The decor inside is beautiful and location is great too - walking distance to a lovely church from the 1200’s and country food that does amazing food! Extra special and added touch was a bottle of Prosecco in the fridge on our arrival! 10/10 couldn’t rate it highly enough!!! Thanks so much!

Faye, Romford

Loved the apartment it had everything we needed. Lovely luxury towels & little extras! Would definitely return. Thank you so much

Ashley, London

We’ve stayed in a lot of places, and this was the epitome of stay perfection. Great comms throughout, but privacy was respected whilst we were there. The apartment itself was even better than the listing led us to expect. Everything you could possibly need was provided, and not just hand-me-downs, but quality items. Peaceful, secluded, romantic, just the right amount of quirk and intrigue. Absolutely top drawer. Anyone else that runs an Airbnb: this is what you should be striving for. Loved it.

Richard, Dursley

We absolutely loved our stay at Steeple View. The apartment has beautiful interior, with everything you need. Lovely surroundings and very peaceful. Thank you so much for our welcome hamper as well, it was a really kind gesture. We hope to come back one day. Thanks again!

Absolutely fabulous apartment set in the lovely village of Newlands. No attention to detail spared in this luxurious accommodation with top quality linen and towels. Short stroll to the excellent village pub which is always a plus. Easy access to nearby villages and town of Monmouth ..local walks in almost every direction and not far from the Forest and Puzzlewood. Really had a great time and will be back. Neil and Raymond really have a gem here.

Paul, Shipston on stour

Matthew, London

This is a stunning space, unique stylish comfortable and unlike anywhere else I have stayed. Thank Neil for being a perfect host and I hope to return soon, thank you so much for a perfect stay, in the most beautiful space that you have created. It was just what I needed and also really appreciated being able to have friends over, many Airbnbs will say no to that, so thank you again.

Alison, Clearwell

This Grade-II Georgian property nestled within sheltered woodlands has been brought back to its former glory by its interior designer owners and boy, does it show! These meticulously designed apartments are ideal for those who want to enjoy the carefully considered spaces as well as explore all the Wye Valley AONB has to offer.

Location

The neighbourhood

Coleford (5 minutes) and Monmouth (15 minutes) both have good coffee shops and cafés. Monmouth also has a Waitrose and M&S Foodhall and some interesting independent shops. The Village Shop in Brockweir is a super place to have a coffee and pick up supplies. Hire canoes or kayaks, cycle, walk parts of Offa’s Dyke, explore Cyril Hart Arboretum.

Local points of interest from Raymond & Neil

  • The Ostrich Inn, only a 5-minute walk is a charming and ancient pub with a roaring fire and a warm welcome to all including dogs, families, cyclists, walkers. Boasting local ales, ciders and a gourmet menu it has a garden and charming views of the church.
  • All Saints Church, Newland, traditionally and affectionately known as the Cathedral of the Forest, dates back to the early 1200s. A beautiful building and a peaceful spot to explore, full of interesting tombs and artefacts. Services listed on its website.
  • The Village Shop Brockweir & Hewelsfield, has a wide variety of every day essentials, fresh and frozen foods and are licensed to sell alcohol and have a range of gifts available. The Cafe has indoor and outdoor seating with lovely views down the valley.
  • The Forest Deli Coleford a brilliant delicatessen with lots of local and foreign cheese, charcuterie, gourmet foods, snacks and nibbles, local wines, beers, ciders, spirits. Order online and have it delivered for your stay.
  • Well worth a visit the ruins of Raglan Castle the grandest ever built by a Welshman. A spectacular ruin with a moated Great Tower of 1435 that still dominates this mighty fortress-palace and it once had one of the finest Renaissance gardens in Briton.
  • Woofield is on the walking map with 4 or more loop walks 4-5km, longer/shorter if you want, a brief walk on a quiet lane and you are into the hills, forests and valleys with opportunities to end up at pubs including The Boat Inn Redbrook "over in Wales".

Introducing

Raymond & Neil

Raymond and Neil are both interior designers – Neil in particular has specialised in international small luxury hotels, apartments and holiday spaces for 25 years, and his eclectic and textured style shines through in their own apartments. Wanting to leave London, it took them a long time to find the right place, and it needed a lot of love. They’re now the fourth owners of this Grade-II 1690 property and only used local tradespeople (the furthest came from Monmouth) to bring the house back to its former glory. They live on-site but you'll be given a key and left to be self-sufficient.
