The Experience

The interiors of two-bedroom Palm House are bright and bold with luxurious touches everywhere: a marble floor in the kitchen, a French antique day bed, excellent quality linen; the interior designer owners (who live in part of the house) describe it as ‘med-glam’, and the feel is certainly spoiling. Outside, you have your own pretty area of terrace.

Newland is a tranquil wooded vale within the Wye Valley, with views to All Saints Church Newland, known locally as The Cathedral of the Forest, and close to Symonds Yat for kayaking, Coleford and Monmouth for shops, cafés and restaurants. Stroll to The Ostrich for a pub supper or it’s a short drive to Michelin star restaurant, The Whitebrook.

The area is superb for walking, cycling and all sorts of watery activities on the river. Hop onto Offa’s Dyke Path in nearby Redbrook, this ancient trail gently criss-crosses the border between England and Wales.

Reviews

Excellent hosts and fabulous place. Only downside is the WiFi which is hit and miss. Non mobile WiFi would be preferable. However not being online all of the time probably added to our enjoyment of our short break! Highly recommend.

We had a wonderful Christmas stay at Palm House. Everything was perfect and we loved the Christmas tree and decorations, chocolates and champagne! We will definitely be back.

Jeanette, Molesey

Peaceful location thats well suited to exploring the area. We enjoyed taking our breakfast outside with the church bells in the background and the lovely countryside views.

Jonathan, London

We had the most fabulous weekend at the Palm House. Such comfortable beds, we slept like logs, as did our elderly dog, in this very peaceful setting. A very well equipped kitchen, it had everything we needed. The decor is amazing, we will be back, thank you.

Judith, Bristol

We enjoyed a wonderful and relaxing few days at Palm House. We loved having such a beautiful home to come back to each night after sightseeing. Palm House had everything we needed as well as a 17th century pub offering delicious dinners within easy walking distance.

Monique, London

Our stay at Palm House was all you could wish for. Everything was of the highest quality (best shower ever!) and the attention to detail was faultless. We shall be back!

Tracey, London

Beautiful house in a beautiful location. The interior is elegant with spacious rooms. Located very close to many local attractions, pub and restaurants. The host was super friendly and replied very promptly to messages. We had a great stay so highly recommended.

Vlad, Reading

Beautiful and stylish accommodation. We would definitely recommend this place.

We loved everything about the apartment! Raymond was friendly and helpful, the cottage is so pretty and we adored the lovely details. It is also perfectly equipped and nothing more to wish for. We thought it was outstandingly clean and we very much enjoyed the cozy pub in walking distance in the wonderful setting of Newland. A stay is highly recommended!

Great stay with my two kids (10 and 4). Beautiful place with classy and elegant decor. The bathroom was amazing; great bath tub and shower pressure was top notch. The small day bed/chaise was perfect for my 4-year old. We all slept great and was very comfortable. Raymond (the host) left clear instructions and was very responsive and friendly. Would highly recommend.

A lovely peaceful stay in a beautiful location. Everything that I wanted. An absolutely fantastic stay. Even though I had children and in laws with me!

Fabulous apartment in a wonderful setting, loved the opulent sitting room and comfortable beds, lots of room for us 4, owners gone to a lot of trouble..... highly recommend!

Balwinder, London

Flexible check in, a personal welcome, wonderful equipped property beautifully decorated. Our family of 5 - with includes 3 teenage boys, had a wonderful time. Plenty of room for us all.

Phillip, Nottingham

What an amazing and fortuitous find. The Palm House is a tropical paradise in the heart of the Forest of Dean. The hosts, Neil and Raymond were incredibly welcoming and our pampered pooch was spoilt with doggie snacklets on arrival. The bedrooms were immaculate and had big comfy beds and crisp linen, it really felt more like a 5 star hotel. Will definitely book again and visit for longer next time . Thank you

Ruth, Halford

The place was absolutely stunning. The photos on the website don’t make the flat justice. We were very impressed with the décor and all the details. It looks like everything has been carefully selected to make you feel you’re in paradise. We were surprised to find a nice bottle of Prosecco and beers waiting for us in the fridge and a basket with snacks. Yummy! We spend hours and hours chatting and enjoying the wonderful view from the garden, which by the way, is three times bigger than it looks in the photos! Can’t recommend this place enough!

Ines, London

We stayed 4 nights at the Palm House, and enjoyed the efforts the owners had gone to in creating a tasteful, luxurious, comfortable interior. Very comfortable beds; crisp bed linen, lots of fluffy white towels, and nicely scented soap. All needs were anticipated and offered. The owners responded quickly to all communications. The village of Newland is pretty, and we had a good evening meal in the quaint and tiny local pub, The Ostrich Recommended.

Helen, London

This Grade-II listed Georgian property nestled within sheltered woodlands has been brought back to its former glory by its interior designer owners and boy, does it show! This meticulously designed apartment is ideal for those who want to enjoy the carefully considered space as well as explore all the Wye Valley AONB has to offer.

Nicole, Sawday's Inspector

Everything was perfect! The hosts made us feel so welcome, lots of little unexpected extras to make our stay all the more special. Nothing was too much trouble. The decor is divine and so much thought has gone into every detail. We’ll definitely be back.

Location

The neighbourhood

Newland is often referred to as The Chelsea of the Forest. It's a special sheltered wooded area 400ft above sea level, with a decent pub in the village, and plenty of choice a little further away. Coleford (5 minutes) has independent shops and the Forest Deli, Monmouth (15 minutes) has a Waitrose, independent shops and cafés. Hire canoes or kayaks and zip down the Wye river, play golf, cycle, walk Offa's Dyke path.

Local points of interest from Raymond & Neil

  • The Ostrich Inn, only a 5-minute walk is a charming and ancient pub with a roaring fire and a warm welcome to all including dogs, families, cyclists, walkers. Boasting local ales, ciders and a gourmet menu it has a garden and charming views of the church.
  • All Saints Church, Newland, traditionally and affectionately known as the Cathedral of the Forest, dates back to the early 1200s. A beautiful building and a peaceful spot to explore, full of interesting tombs and artefacts. Services listed on its website.
  • The Village Shop Brockweir & Hewelsfield, has a wide variety of every day essentials, fresh and frozen foods and are licensed to sell alcohol and have a range of gifts available. The Cafe has indoor and outdoor seating with lovely views down the valley.
  • The Forest Deli Coleford a brilliant delicatessen with lots of local and foreign cheese, charcuterie, gourmet foods, snacks and nibbles, local wines, beers, ciders, spirits. Order online and have it delivered for your stay.
  • Well worth a visit the ruins of Raglan Castle the grandest ever built by a Welshman. A spectacular ruin with a moated Great Tower of 1435 that still dominates this mighty fortress-palace and it once had one of the finest Renaissance gardens in Briton.
  • Woofield is on the walking map with 4 or more loop walks 4-5km, longer/shorter if you want, a brief walk on a quiet lane and you are into the hills, forests and valleys with opportunities to end up at pubs including The Boat Inn Redbrook "over in Wales".

Introducing

Raymond & Neil

Raymond and Neil are both interior designers – Neil in particular has specialised in international small luxury hotels, apartments and holiday spaces for 25 years, and his eclectic and textured style shines through in their own apartments. Wanting to leave London, it took them a long time to find the right place, and it needed a lot of love. They’re now the fourth owners of this Grade-II 1690 property and only used local tradespeople (the furthest came from Monmouth) to bring the house back to its former glory. They live on-site but you'll be given a key and left to be self-sufficient.
