The Experience

Arriving is a joy, especially if you’ve had a long walk and you’re hungry. The fire is lit in all seasons, there are fresh flower arrangements, comfortable chairs and benches, original artwork on the walls and a happy atmosphere. Bedrooms above the pub are spacious and painted in beautiful colours, each with a seating area, magazines, walking guides, books and the means to make tea and coffee. Two bedrooms are reached up a metal stairway from the garden and have high ceilings with plenty of space; bathrooms are swish with Bramley soaps and lotions.

Breakfasts can be lighter (granola, fruit smoothies, soaked oats with fruit) or a full English, shakshuka or a bacon butty. Lunches and suppers come in traditional pub style, good meat and fish from local suppliers and plenty of vegetarian choices. Of course there are Butcombe ales.

The beer garden sits quietly at the back, festooned with fairy lights and cosy all year with heaters.

Reviews

The Lion is such a cosy and comfortable pub in a charming Cotswolds village. I loved the indoor fireplace and the well-kept, quiet and private beer garden – perfect for enjoying a drink and a meal in the sun. The food was delicious, highly recommended! A fantastic place to dine well, relax in beautifully curated rooms, and explore the Cotswolds.

Location

The neighbourhood

It's worth exploring St Peter's Church, dating from the 1450s, with a 90ft tower in perpendicular style and 40 stone grotesques. Sudeley Castle is a 16-minute walk and there are lots of events; Cheltenham is a 25-minute drive or you can catch an (irregular) bus. Stow and Bourton are a 25-minute drive and have antique shops, bakeries, cafés and tourist shops. Cold Aston has a great pub, The Plough.

Local points of interest from Butcombe Brewery

  • The Lion Inn is ideally located in the centre of Winchcombe, a wonderfully unspoilt town in one of the most stunning areas of the Cotswolds.
  • Ideally placed to visit Cheltenham which hosts fabulous festivals throughout the year such as Literature, Music, Jazz, Food, Science and of course the world famous race meets.
  • Our town is full of antiques centres, award-winning delicatessens, acclaimed restaurants and, on the outskirts, one of the most romantic country houses in England – Sudeley Castle!
  • At The Lion Inn we have a selection of our favourite, local, circular walks that we can provide for your stay. These range from 1 hour short walks to 5-6 hour romps through the Cotswold countryside.
  • 4 star awarded pub and several times over award winner, including New Pub of the Year 2017.
  • We can arrange clay pigeon shooting, horse riding, fishing, rides on the steam train, visits to Prescott Speed Hill Climb (on certain dates) and tickets for the shows in Cheltenham.
