The Experience

An early 19th-century semi-detached cottage with a peaceful feel. Walk straight into the sitting room with underfloor heating, comfy sofa, Roberts radio and twinkling wood-burner. On rainy days you’ll find board games and books, some poetry. A new Shaker kitchen has all the gear for determined cooks and you eat at a round wooden dining table. All the useful basics for cooking are left for you plus a bottle of wine.

Next to the fireplace and behind a door are enclosed stairs with a rope handrail which lead you upstairs to a twin, then a double, both with White Company linen, vintage lamps and high ceilings. The bathroom is downstairs with a large walk-in shower, St Eval and Soap Folk goodies.

In summer you’ll be in the well-tended formally landscaped gardens, admiring the wisteria and topiary and looking out for fish in the pond. There’s a chimenea, sun loungers and outdoor table too. If you don’t want to cook wander down to The Swan, owned by Thyme.

My husband and I love taking long walks through the English countryside and exploring the picturesque villages of the Cotswolds. Learoys has turned out to be the perfect base for visiting all the beautiful sights in the area. The little cottage has all the details that make you feel right at home. I've especially enjoyed the lovely garden, which is perfect for relaxing and reading. Gretchen has been incredibly helpful, ensuring we had everything we needed and that we were comfortable during our stay.

We’ve had a wonderful stay at Learoyds Cottage. It’s been decorated and furnished so beautifully; it felt like home as soon as we arrived. Southrop is a perfect Cotswold village situated within easy reach of numerous restaurants. We enjoyed some fabulous meals in the village pub and Thyme restaurant, both a short walk away. Surrounded by beautiful countryside, we walked for miles and when we got ‘home’ we enjoyed relaxing in the gardens which have been landscaped and are beautifully kept. Learoyds Cottage has a special atmosphere and we’ll certainly be returning.

We had a wonderful stay at Learoyds with our two children. The adornment is just in tune with the Cotswolds, the garden is exquisite and Gretchen makes sure that everything you need in and outside the house is at hand ! We recommend highly a stay in this haven. Perfect for a quiet retreat not far from Oxford and Blenheim palace.

If you are looking to get away and relax, this charming cottage is the perfect bolthole. Gretchen, the owner has considered every detail. Cosy up and admire the vintage interiors within, but do venture out - the garden is one to be admired by all.

The neighbourhood

There's no shop in the village but Lechlade is a 5-minute drive if you forget something. Treat yourselves to a meal at Thyme, just around the corner - expensive but worth it for a special occasion. Fairford has a market on Wednesday, Burford for antique shopping and a deli, or Cotswold Wildlife Park for a day out. There are endless walks and cycles, Buscot Park and Kelmscott are close.

The village of Southrop is in the Domesday book, and lies in a conservation area on the Gloucestershire/Oxfordshire borders, midway between Cirencester and Burford.
Foodie lovers will delight in the local pubs and restaurants in our part of the Cotswolds.
William Morris' Kelmscott Manor and Buscott Park are both a short drive away, and for children, the Cotswolds Wildlife Park offers exotic animals in the grounds of a stately home.
Learoyds cottage is three miles from the local market towns of Lechlade and Fairford. Here there are bakeries, shops, post office, supermarket, chemist, surgery and pubs. Fairford comes alive on Wednesday mornings with a market in the square.
Pretty Burford is a 5 mile drive with antiques shops and art galleries.
Wild swim in the river Leach, a short walk from the cottage.

Gretchen is an ex-BBC producer/director and has a production company, so having a peaceful country escape is perfect for her work/life balance. For years she dreamt of having a place in the Cotswolds, and squirrelled savings away until she could buy this cottage, just an hour and a half's drive from west London. She hopes you'll enjoy great walks, suppers at the local pub and deep sleeps.
