The Experience
Relish an Aga-cooked breakfast as the barges sail by. The garden runs almost into the river where these majestic craft are moored, and the mudflats are a bird watcher’s dream.
Beneath wide skies this extended fisherman’s house looks out at the back to 12th-century St Mary’s where Kim and Gerry ring the Sunday bells. It’s an immaculate B&B in a special location, and each cosy guest room has a river view. A short, steep walk up the hill brings you to the quaint High Street, but the Quay is the nicest part of town.
A two-minute stroll takes you to The Jolly Sailor, a pretty pub with a popular terrace. A ten-minute wander and you’re at the Maldon Smokehouse – great for a bucketful of prawns.

32 The Hythe is the best bed and breakfast that we have ever stayed in. From the minute that we arrived Kim and Gerry made us feel so welcome. The room was so comfortable with a very comfortable bed ,luxurious bathroom and the most amazing views. We had a delicious breakfast served in the garden every morning. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend it and certainly intend to return soon.

We had a very relaxing few days, staying in a super family home. We were made very welcome and the facilities and breakfasts are first-rate. Luckily, the weather was good enough for breakfast in the garden with fabulous views over the moored sailing barges to the river and saltmarshes. Kim and Gerry kindly supplied plenty of good advice on places to eat and drink, and things to do. A great stay!

Keen sailors Kim and Gerry are as sunny in disposition as the huge sunflowers they grow in the garden. They clearly love hostng guests - serving breakfast straight from the Aga, and saving up tips on things to see and do. The perfect place to stay for a weekend in Maldon, and worth making the trip just to stay here.

Location
The neighbourhood
Maldon has a peaceful, friendly charm. The Hythe is a historic quay where vintage sailing barges ply their trade in summer, and the Maldon Mud Race (May) and the Regatta (September) are a local sensation. For good food, try The Queen’s Head along the Quay. On the High Street, check out Mrs Salisbury’s Tea Rooms, and Dante’s Brasserie for gourmet fish and chips.
Local points of interest from Kim & Gerry Gibbs
- Home of the Maldon Sea Salt company, used by many famous chefs and Wilkins jam factory with Tea Rooms, Tiptree and Heybridge
- There are lovely coastal walks and bird watching opportunities along the Blackwater estuary with many strategically placed public houses for lunch
- On our doorstep and viewed from the house we have many moored Thames sailing barges which offer river trips
- Just a short car journey away you can explore the beautiful St Peters Chapel, Bradwell on sea built 654AD
- Visit The Company Shed, West Mersea, frequented by many famous chefs
- Enjoy a visit to RHS Gardens, Hyde Hall

Introducing
Kim & Gerry Gibbs
Kim and Gerry are experienced and very welcoming hosts. Gerry works in finance; Kim, born and bred in Maldon, used to work for consumer magazines. They bought The Hythe in 2006 as a family home, and later started doing B&B. They are keen sailors - Gerry likes racing - and have their own little boat.
Thank you Kim and Gerry for our stay which was calm and enjoyable. You made us welcome and we appreciated the comfy room and little treats after our cycling. Your home is bright and charming and in a perfect location. Also thanks for having us for the one night only; wish we could have stayed a bit longer. Our stay with you was one of the highlights of our cycling tour and we enjoyed our chat and the breakfast. Sandra
