The Experience
It’s peaceful, traditional, pristine, and nothing is too much trouble for Christine. Welcome to a listed Georgian house on a 475-acre estate near Durham, its elegant sitting rooms furnished with pictures and photos, log fires and big sofas, billiards and a baby grand, and great sash windows with garden and woodland views. Resident springer spaniels Max and Barney love all dogs, so bring yours; stroll the magnificent lawns, cycle alongside the river. Breakfast? Eggs from the hens, bacon from the pigs, honey and fruits from the walled garden: a perfect start to the day. Enormous beds, luxurious linen and fresh flowers await your return.

We've spent five wonderful days in the Cottage in Burnhopeside Hall. In the real world of tourism, you never find yourself in such a magnificent place: huge, full of old-charm character with all the modern comforts, an enormous kitchen with top class electrical appliances, leather sofas and a fire place in the living room, and French windows with views to the garden, a pampering bathroom and the best bed we've ever slept in. A wonderful garden stretching up to the river, and hovering above everything is Christine, the most attentive host one could think of. We're grateful for the experience.

We had the most wonderful stay and although it was for only one night have told everybody we know that they need to go there! Christine our host could not have done anything more to make our time there perfect, from a room which blew the socks off any five star hotel we've stayed in, to a delicious home cooked dinner and equally fabulous breakfast. Put simply, it's like being in your own home, our dogs were welcome everywhere and the grounds are perfect for walking in. The resident Springer Spaniels were very friendly and used to canine visitors too. The perfect bolthole.

What a wonderful stay, probably our best B&B experience in the UK. Christine's attention to detail and organisation is fantastic, all done, in what appears to be an effortless manner. Nothing was too much trouble and the provision of "home from home" touches, such as a tray of tea in the lounge in front of a roaring fire made for the most relaxing and memorable afternoon and stay.

What a wonderful place! Host Christine greeted us with tea, biscuits, roaring log fire and Max the dog. Kitted me out with a very fetching boiler suit and lent us a map to go walking. Beautiful, peaceful property and very comfotable bed. We'll be back......

Excellent, our host Christine could not have done more, 10 out of 10. My wife and I were attending a function in nearby Sacriston. To be listed in Sawdays we knew this would be a nice place to stay but it truly was very good. All the nice small touches like ensuring my wife could have gluten free options. Comfortable bed and very quiet location. We went for a 5 mile walk in the afternoon and because of its location its easy to do this from the front door.. Amazing breakfast .Nearby Lanchester is nice too

Location
The neighbourhood
Local points of interest from Christine Hewitt
- Burnhopeside Hall was the home of pioneering engineer William Hedley. His Puffing Billy Steam Engine, the oldest in the world, can be seen in the Science Museum in London. A working model can be seen nearer to home at the Beamish Musem near Stanley.
- The Burnhopeside Estate has 475 acres of farmland and woodland and 3/4 mile of river. It provides ample space for walking, shooting (in winter months by arrangement for shoot days) and fishing.
- We are very dog friendly and make no extra charge for visiting dogs. We have an outside building where dogs and bowls can be cleaned and plenty of room for drying things. Walking boots and wet clothes can be dried here at any time.
- The woodlands provide some interesting mountain bike runs. Our land links to the Lanchester Walkway, which provides good routes for walking, cycling and riding.
- A visit to Middleton in Teesdale with a walk to High Force followed by visiting Eggleston Hall Gardens and either lunch or dinner at The Rose & Crown at Romaldkird would make for an enjoyable day out!
- Burnhopeside is well placed to visit Durham City and is very popular with parents of students based there. The Cathedral & Castle is a World Heritage. The Durham Coastal walk, Hadrian's Wall and Beamish Museum are all interesting places to visit.

Having half expected the somewhat distant feel of a nonetheless comfortable hotel, on arrival I was immediately made to feel a welcome house guest in a country retreat - a feeling that persisted throughout my brief stay. The bedrooms and public rooms alike were beautifully furnished in keeping with the period of the house, though with all appropriate modern features, and the breakfasts were excellent. Christine and her team were ready sources of local information and insight, which all contributed to making a two-night stay have the quality of a relaxing longer break. I will happily return.
