The Experience
Beaminster – or Emminster in Thomas Hardy’s Tess – sits in a lush Dorset valley. From the hills above, you drop through glorious country, rolling down to this old market town, where the church tower soars towards heaven. As for this lovely hotel, it’s a 14th-century priest’s house and comes with original trimmings: stone flags, mullioned windows, old beams and huge inglenooks.
You’re looked after beautifully but it’s the friendliness you’ll remember – there’s no pomp or ceremony, it’s intimate and deeply comfortable, with something beautiful at every turn. The kitchen champions local ingredients, including fish straight from the waves. Bubbly Silvana is front of house and takes great care to make sure you’re as happy as a sandboy.
It’s worth exploring the village, particularly the church and its magnificent tower with 41 ‘crocketted’ pinnacles. You’re right next door to the Beaminster Museum and when you’ve done with that there are five circular walks in the hills surrounding you.

Location
The neighbourhood
This is a very pretty, 'picture-postcard' town with good independent shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants. It sits in a natural valley and the houses are built from Ham Hill stone - they glow golden as the sun sets - so it's got a reputation for being arty thanks to the many artists who have settled here. Five hills surround you for wonderful walks, Bridport (15 minutes on the bus) and Lyme, a half hour drive, are close for great restaurants, fossil hunting and plenty of beaches for body boarding and picnics.
Local points of interest from Silvana Bandini
- Abbotsbury Swannery and Sub-Tropical Gardens. See baby swans hatch live in May.
- Beaminster Festival - in June/July - music, art and celebrity.
- Fossil hunting for ages at Charmouth Beach - part of the Jurassic coast just 15 minutes drive.
- Bridport Literary Festival - book & author events, poetry, theatre, children's entertainment - every November
- Mapperton House, Athelhampton House & Forde Abbey - a choice of 3 amazing country houses & gardens.
- Haynes Motor Museum, Sparkford; Royal Navy Air Museum Yeovilton & the Tank Museum, Bovington.

Introducing
Silvana Bandini
Owning her own hotel and restaurant has been Silvana's lifelong dream so she was thrilled when she stumbled across this beautiful old building. She fell in love with all the character in the house - the stone fireplaces, mullioned windows and wobbly floors and knew she was just the person to bring this unpolished gem back to life. She's created a home from home experience with warm service and fabulous food.
A friendly and well-run pub - efficient staff. We enjoyed the mackerel, followed by warm brownies.
