The Experience
In a village with roses round every door is one of the finest inns in England, built by the father of modern archaeology (whose museum, the Pitt Rivers, is in Oxford). Today, attentive staff keep the atmosphere warm and happy. Bedrooms – big in the main house, smaller in the stables, all super smart – have cool colours, crisp linen, fancy bathrooms (and hi-tech gadgetry in most).
The big 17th-century bar has a period feel: flagstones, inglenook, fresh flowers and a fashionable mismatch of tables and chairs. There are cosy alcoves to hide in, a book-filled drawing room to browse and a smart white-raftered dining room. Interesting seasonal menus feature good food from West Country suppliers and include some surprises among the delicious pub classics. Breakfast is quite a feast and will sustain you on some wonderful walks.
Head to Win Green, the highest point in the Cranborne Chase, for panoramic views stretching to the sea.

Location
The neighbourhood
Roam paths through Ashmore Wood – an ancient semi-natural woodland, plantation conifers and hazel coppice. Two ancient hillforts, Badbury Rings and Hambledon Hill, are close by and worth the climb. Kingston Lacy, described by the National Trust as 'an Italian palace', is filled with wonderful art. Visit Shaftesbury and its cobbled Gold Hill, find a fascinating museum of local history.

Fireside snugs, intimate corners, eight comfortable rooms (the best upstairs under the thatch), and self-catering Moles Cottage for shooters (winter) and families (summer) give this 17th-century inn a warm, traditional feel. What's more, it's in a sleepy, off-the-beaten-track thatched village deep in the Cranborne Chase and close to fabulous downland walks.
