The Experience
Those who like their booze will discover endless supplies: an honesty bar in the sitting room, the cellar bar downstairs (also open to the public and run by Dark Bear) has over two hundred rums. The Potting Shed bar and kitchen serve wines, draughts, bottled beers and local tipples.
Foodies will be tickled too: award-winning breakfasts may start with porridge and local honey, smoked salmon and avocado, The Dorset (full English) or The Veggie, homemade marmalade, freshly-baked pastries and their special bubble and squeak – all ingredients from local suppliers. Order light bites at lunchtime and sharing boards at supper.
Children and dogs are welcomed, there’s lots to do in town and the beach is less than a mile away. Bedrooms are supremely comfortable, bathrooms have homemade lotions and potions. A thoughtful, fuss-free place to stay with engaging owners.

Location
The neighbourhood
Bridport has lots of restaurants, including Olive Tree, but also three theatres and many festivals including folk, food, literature and beer. There are lots of bracing walks either inland or along the coast - you're in an AONB and the owners can give you directions or lend maps. National Cycling Route No 2 is on the doorstep and hired bikes can be dropped off - there's safe storage.
Local points of interest from Sara & Marcus Ellis-Edwards
- The beautiful 18th Century Bridge House is Grade 2 listed and built originally for dissenting ministers. The house has been a family home, a school for nautical pursuits, an officers mess in the second world war and sits on the banks of the river Asker.
- Just a 5 minute stroll to the centre of town, Bridport is home to the eclectic street market on a weds & Sat, selling vintage goods, where nobody leaves empty handed. The town has some great independent shops, restaurants & boasts 3 theatres.
- On market days the air is filled with music from buskers & bands in Bucky Doo square, and wafts from the various street food stalls. The Electric Palace is a Art Deco theatre in the centre of town, hosting many top acts from comedy to poetry & music.
- The closest beach at West Bay is just over a mile away by foot, or a 5 minute drive. The walk takes you through the meadow and past the working water wheel of the 17th Century, thatched brewery of Palmers, who also offer brewery tours.
- Golden cap is the tallest cliff on the south coast & is on the south west coastal path, with it's spectacular views. On a clear day you can see the whole of Lyme Bay & the UNESCO world heritage site "The Jurassic Coast".
- Fabulous countryside walks with a pub lunch at the end, or enjoy seafood at Hive Beach and watch the world go by. Do as much or as little as you like.

Introducing
Sara & Marcus Ellis-Edwards
Sara and Marcus and their family moved down here from Windsor in 2017. They'd always loved this area and have really immersed themselves in the town, supporting other small businesses. They spent ages renovating the house, turning what was a rather old-fashioned hotel into the lovely place it is today - it's generous, special and you'll be very well looked after.
This place is really special, the history, the ambiance, the welcome.....I could go on. It's a lovely country house set in the town, beautifully decorated and furnished. The hosts Sara and Marcus are delightful, and have an outstanding attention to details. I would love to return!
