The Experience

Leafy lanes and a private drive lead you to this lovely Green Oak Barn next to the owners’ hamstone house hidden in rolling West Dorset. Savour the total peace, valley views and clear starry skies.

Martyn and Susie give you a very comfortable stay – the bed is superking and over 7-feet long. Views look out over fields, oak beams soar above you and the whole room is lovely and light. There’s a little kitchen area which has all you need for holiday cooking. The thatched folly is yours to relax in, as well as a private area by the orchard with teak furniture and sun loungers.

Walk to the nearest village for a shop, a bit further for a good pub. Spot deer, foxes and swallows and house martins dipping and diving over the garden, listen to nightingales, drive to the Jurassic coast for a day by the sea. Return to comfy sofas and your own private space, as well as an evening drink watching the wonderful sunsets.

Reviews

There's plenty of room and Oak Barn is well equipped and tastefully furnished. Quality and thoughtfulness are Martyn and Susie's watchwords here; they are friendly and helpful hosts.

Stuart, Wiltshire

We had a relaxing 4 night stay at Wooden Cabbage. The accommodation is spacious & comfortable. The hosts friendly & warm. Located a little off the beaten track, but in easy reach of various National Trust properties, Yeovil & Dorchester. We enjoyed relaxing in the garden with the views across the valley, great to watch the sunset with a nice glass of something & let the peace & calm work its magic.

Ian & Amanda, Pewsey

Martyn and Susie were the best hosts. As soon as we arrived we were met with a warm welcome and shown around their beautiful barn and garden, it offered stunning views of the surrounding countryside. The accommodation was spotlessly clean and very comfortable, we really enjoyed our stay at The Oak Barn and would go back in a heartbeat.

Len, Chichester

Very friendly owners. Their stunning garden is such a plus to this venue. We sat on the lawn and enjoyed the far reaching views of Somerset. If you're looking for a place to recharge- Oak Barn provides you with space, peace and tranquility

We've just enjoyed an another amazing holiday at the beautiful Oak Barn at the Wooden cabbage, surrounded by peaceful countryside and swallows soaring the skies. Susie and Martin are delightful and so welcoming. The Barn is well equipped, very clean and is well situated to explore many nearby places of interest. There are lots of amazing pubs and restaurants in the area too, you are really spoilt for choice. But if you just want to totally chill, you can enjoy Susie and Martyns beautiful garden with views over the fields and beyond. Truly a very special place to us !! We will be back !

Rachel, Surrey

We recently stayed at the oak barn at the wooden cabbage, WOW what a gem of a place , so quiet and peaceful and able to use the owners Martyn and Susies amazing garden overlooking paddock and fields. The barn was very clean and well equipped with a HUGE bed !! We loved our stay at the Oak Barn. An overall amazing relaxing stay. Enjoyed relaxing in the garden listening the amazing birdsong and taking in the view, but also visiting the coast not far away. All in all, we loved it. Re-booked for next year on our departure. Thanks so much Martyn and Susie !!xx

Rachel, East Molesey

"Excellent communications with Susie prior to our stay. Always responded quickly and was very understanding when we needed to rearrange our dates. Provided a very warm welcome, great recommendations for places to visit and an extensive list of restaurants on their website." Tip: "Restaurants- The Fox at Coscombe, Brassica and Ollerod at Beaminster all excellent. Fabulous walk from the house to Evershot through the Ilchester estate, Melbury House. Sculpture onthe Lakes worth a visit. Coastal walks from West Port and a visit to Bridport on a Saturday for the market a real delight"

Hilary, St Albans

This was a fabulous place to stay surrounded by the most beautiful countryside. The Oak Barn was very clean and private and well equipped so that we had everything we needed for self-catering. Thoughtful touches such as a vase of fresh garden flowers, milk, orange juice, tea, coffee and lovely biscuits were evidence of the genuine care the hosts take to make their guests feel welcome. Even the car had its own designated under cover parking space! This was our first venture into self-catering and we would definitely repeat the experience again here.

Steve, Hastings

Lovely stay at the Oak Barn. Very peaceful, beautiful location. Martyn and Susie are wonderful hosts - helpful and informative. Surrounding countryside is stunning. Definitely recommended!

Jane, London

The Oak Barn lived up to all our expectations and was a beautiful and tranquil place to stay. Our host Martin was very friendly and knowledgeable and helped us with our days out. We loved the Barn itself and the gardens and views over the surrounding area were amazing. This was our first visit but we will definitely be going back and would highly recommend this property. What a wonderful place to get away from it all for a few days. Comfortable, spacious and very well looked after, the Oak Barn provides a great base, in beautiful countryside and with excellent hosts. Thoroughly recommended.

Jane, London

Really lovely quiet retreat. The tie-beamed ceiling and furnishings of this long studio were charming and cosy. A Christmas tree with lights made the evenings rather magical. Wifi was easily adequate for the two Zoom meetings I had to attend during our stay. The antique marquetry bed was enormous and comfortable. Our stay was during the pandemic, so we didn’t eat out. We brought food from COOK and the kind owners allowed us to store it in their freezer. They also dried our clothes when we got soaked to the skin. The sculpture park is worth a visit and there are plenty of other walks.

David, Oxford

A delightful "find" a true rural idyll literally far from the madding crowd yet well located for countryside and coast. England at her best; sleepy villages and country pubs rolling hills and wooded valleys defended by proud cliffs striding on forever. The very name Wooden Cabbage promised a special experience and so it was. The Oak Barn, traditional in concept yet contemporary in execution, spacious but intimate where the imagination runs free, rustic but practical and comfortable.

Chris, Aylesbury

We loved staying here with our dog, Freddie. Martyn and Susie were delightful hosts, and very helpful with suggesting lovely pubs to dine at, and walks to take. We so enjoyed the peaceful evenings, sipping wine, looking out over their garden burgeoning with vegetables, scented roses, and watching the most amazing skies as the sun set. The oak barn itself was gorgeous, especially the very accommodating large bed!! What a wonderful piece of furniture. As well as dining out, we also cooked some sumptuous feasts in the barn. Our 5 days' break was a truly relaxing escape. We hope to come back!

Emma, Verwood

A really pleasurable stay with lovely views and great countryside. The barn is beautiful, and set in gardens fragrant with David Austin roses. A real delight! Martyn and Susie were accommodating and thoughtful hosts without being intrusive. Throughly recommended.

Location

The neighbourhood

The Oak Suite is in an AONB. There are lovely walks from the house; a favourite is four miles into Melbury Park and on to the pub, The Acorn Inn, in Evershot. East Chelborough is made up of just a few houses and a little church (sixth smallest in England) just ten minutes’ walk away; the 13th-century All Saints in Sutton Bingham is worth a visit too (about three miles). The Fox Inn at Corscombe (3 miles) serves good food and has a garden; The Greyhound at Sydling St Nicholas is a 15-minute drive. There’s a village shop within half a mile (Halstock).
