The Experience
In wonderful isolation, you’ll want to stay lost in the folds of West Dorset forever. The Carthouse showcases Victor’s passion for the environment and the incredible workmanship from him and his artisan friends. Everything has been recycled or built from wood from their own coppice, the walls are lime-washed, terracotta tiles have been reclaimed and the furniture hand-made. A glance to the south-facing veranda reveals Victor’s handywork in carved leaves of sweet chestnut on the pillars. Earth’s bounty shines here, and with so much beautiful wood there’s no need for fussy adornments on the walls. Rooms stretch to cathedral ceilings and flood with light: bedrooms are huge and have room for extra beds for happy family hordes; the double downstairs is perfect for wheelchair users. A Swedish wood-burner and richly coloured sofas invite lazy evenings, and the farmhouse kitchen’s Esse range cooker and electric hobs make cooking a joy. You can climb Eggardon Hill behind the farm for views of Lyme Regis and the Jurassic Coast, head to the sea or find treasures in Bridport’s antique market. Walkers, cyclists and twitchers will be in heaven; kids will love the hand-built swing, and there’s a studio to play a game or three of table tennis.

The Carthouse is quite splendid and we've stayed there a number of times. It accommodates a dozen people very comfortably and is well-equipped. The location is fantastic - on a working farm (dairy) down the end of a very long drive tucked in underneath an Iron-Age fort, Eggardon, from where the views are tremendous. You are really in deepest, darkest, Dorset but the natives are friendly and there's a warm, cosy, pub in Nettlecombe not 10 minutes away. Lots of shops and a market (Sat) in Bridport (3 miles) and the sea and a UNESCO-protected coastline (4 miles).

We love The Carthouse! It's warm, generous and welcoming just like it's owner Victor. We've been with friends and family many times and always enjoy the big comfy beds, cooking up feasts in the generously equipped kitchen while the kids hang out playing in the garden or ping pong room. We take revitalising stomps- straight out of the door and up "Eggy Hill" then return to roast our feet beside the log burner and play board games around the huge dining table. The Carthouse has never failed to be exactly what we've needed.

Thirteen of us all shared this fab barn this past week – ages ranged from 14 months to 88 yrs. Room to enjoy ourselves with plenty of space. We always go to a different destination each year and so far this is the best. Thank you so much for a wonderful holiday

- Famous and most notorious smuggler Isaac Gulliver owned the Eggardon Farm in the late eighteenth century. His family sold it in 1871, a century later.

We had a glorious stay at the Carthouse over New Year. It was a big family gathering with plenty of kids and adults and the houseis the perfect venue for this. Spacious and well fitted out with great social spaces to relax in and cooking facilities to share a meal. There is a games room for the kids, although ours spent alot of time 'looking after' the farmer's cows who were sheltering in the barn. There are some lovely pubs in walkable/drivable distance, good scenery for walking, biking or running and a hill fort up the road worth exploring. We had a great time and will be back.
