The Experience

The house sits in a tiny, quiet hamlet surrounded by lovely countryside. Everything flows well inside with lots of interconnecting doors, two staircases (children will love disappearing up one and coming down another), a handy utility room for muddy boots, a good-sized sitting room and an elegant dining room – both with an open fire.

The farmhouse-style kitchen has plenty of kit, a range-style cooker and a door to the garden. You’re left a welcome hamper of Dorset treats and a few basics in the cupboards. You also get free entry to the fabulous Minterne Gardens down the road – a trail with year-round interest and a unique collection of Himalayan rhododendrons and azaleas with waterfalls and rare trees.

Bedrooms and bathrooms are on the first and second floors – comfortable, chintzy and with plenty of light. Long summer evenings in the garden will be lovely – fire up the barbecue, chatter and sip, let children go safely free-range.

You should know

  • Some of the bedrooms share bathrooms and the family room is more suitable for children
  • The road up to the house is unmade so does have the odd pothole – take it slowly if you have a low-slung car
  • The pool (April to October) is 900 metres down the road and you book your two-hour slots ahead. Check opening times for the Minterne Gardens

Reviews

This is a beautifully designed house on the Minterne estate, stylishly done inside and with tons of space to dine and play outside. Get the fires roaring when it's chilly and throw doors open onto the garden in summer – and when it gets very toasty, head down the road to the main house to swim and explore the Himalayan gardens.

Location

The neighbourhood

In Cerne Abbas you'll find a village shop, post office and three pubs including the Giant Inn for handcrafted real ales. Walking and cycling will be hilly and sublime – you're on the edge of the North Dorset Downs. Sherborne with its beautiful abbey and some good independent shops is within ten miles, as is Dorchester – a bustling market town. For superb food head to Summer Lodge in Evershot.

Local points of interest from Henry Digby

  • We are a 20 minute walk through the fields to Verne Abbas, a great village for the local store, The New Inn Pub for amazing food, a visit to The Abbey.
  • Sherborne is a 12 minute drive away, Waitrose, Sainsbury are there, both deliver to the house. Lovely place to eat is The Green, and D'Urbeville's for a cocktail and browse around the crafts for sale.
  • We love Sherborne for the Abbey, known as the Cathedral of Dorset, wonderful calendar of services, events and music recitals, a must visit, along with the antique shops and gifts shops, a delightful Dorset Town.
  • Other great places to eat near the house are The Greyhound Inn, Sydling St Nicholas, The Brace of Pheasants and Plush.
  • Our favourite beach spot is the Hive Beach Cafe, fab food and a lovely safe beach for swimming, all right in between the Jurassic Coast walks and Burton Bradstock.

Introducing

Henry Digby

Henry is the current Lord Digby. The house, estate and gardens originally belonged to the Churchill family and were bought by the Digbys 250 years ago. They've retained the Churchill tapestries, pictures and furniture so if you're interested and Henry has time, he is happy to give you a tour. The garden is the result of the family sponsoring plant hunting trips during the 18th century.
