The Experience

A lovely old stone fireplace in the sitting room, local art on the walls and attractive fabrics give much character to this cosy cottage. Leave your hats and coats in the porch, settle into the comfy sofa and chairs – you’ll find lots of books, guides, cookery books and maps to leaf through and a cupboard full of games. The separate dining room has bench seating for convivial meals and the kitchen is compact but well-equipped with a sweet window seat.

Upstairs there are bedrooms (1 double, 1 twin/double, 1 single) in neutral colours with feather and down duvets and pillows, soft throws and painted wooden furniture – one has views towards the church tower, all are warm and very comfortable.

A five-minute walk will take you to an independent greengrocers, bakery and butcher for stocking up, and in summer you can eat in the little garden surrounded by mature trees and shrubs, or hide in the summer house.

Reviews

We have just had the perfect 3 nights at Blackbird Cottage. Beaminster is a really lovely small town with interesting independent shops and restaurants. Mapperton house is a couple of miles down the road and a beautiful place to visit, as is the countryside around and the easily accessible Jurasic coast. The cottage itself is beautifully furnished and decorated, with supremely comfortable bedrooms. Altogether a cosy place to stay in a great area!

Blackbird Cottage is a quiet, clean, cosy and calming place. Close to the local restaurants and shops in the village centre. Very near to West Bay and the Jurassic Coast with plenty of local walks from the front door. We did some trail running and visited Lyme Regis as well as having a fantastic Sunday roast at The Anchor Inn. The whole place made us feel at ease. A beautiful log burning fire to keep warm and the best nights sleep we’ve had in a long time. We will definitely visit again.

Another fantastic stay at Blackbird Cottage - This cottage really does have everything you need for a perfect Dorset break! Moments to Beaminster’s lovely square with great independent shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants (The Ollerod and Brassica are superb). A short drive to a number of beautiful local beaches - Many with fantastic beach cafés serving everything from Lobster & Chablis to crab sandwiches and pizzas. The cottage itself is super cute… Grade 2 listed, nice interior design touches and a gorgeous garden to come back to after a day on the beach/ long country walk. We will back !

Blackbird Cottage was delightful. Attention to detail was second to none with beautiful furnishings and a high end spec. It was spotlessly clean and welcoming. We were able to park outside for the duration of our stay. We enjoyed two fabulous meals at Brassica and The Ollerod....and the treat of being able to walk to both restaurants. The town and area have much to offer. A real gem of a find. Thank you Sue.

We had a wonderful 2 day stay in Blackbird Cottage in March. It is a lovely place, in a charming town, beautifully appointed and Sue could not be more helpful!

Martin, Bristol

We enjoyed an amazing weekend at Blackbird Cottage, it really is perfect for couples. Beaminster is an unspoilt gem of a Dorset market town. We had an impressive meal at as lovely local restaurant, Brassica, and loved hearing church bells from the cottage mid morning on Sunday. We walked through beautiful countryside from the doorstep of the cottage and we enjoyed exploring the area, the highlight was a beach walk at Hive Beach down the road. The cottage is stylish and immaculate and the kitchen is very well equipped. We slept well in a very comfortable bed and left feeling very refreshed!

Charlotte, Bath

If you are looking for a peaceful break away, this is the place for you. With independent shops and eateries on your doorstep, you can come and do as much or as little as you wish. Cosy up in front of the fire with a book or take a short drive out to explore all the Jurassic Coast has to offer. It is easy to relax here.

Location

The neighbourhood

There are four cafés in Beaminster and two local pubs - The Red Lion and The Greyhound Inn. You can join The Wessex Way or The Hardy Way from the cottage for glorious countryside strolls. Mapperton House and Gardens is a 5-minute drive and the Jurassic Coast is 20 minutes for beaches. Lyme Regis is half an hour and Framptons of Bridport, a traditional family butcher and deli is a 15-minute drive.

Local points of interest from Sue Beddoe

  • Beautiful countryside walks are in all directions from the doorstep at Blackbird Cottage. Discover this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with walks to suit different abilities.
  • A great place to relax in all seasons. Enjoy a cosy wood burning stove in the colder months and in the Summer watch the sunset from the summer house, listen to the chiming of the clock tower and the evening bird song.
  • With a good selection of pubs and award-winning restaurants all within a strolling distance from the cottage, Beaminster is a great place for a relaxed stay with friends and family.
  • Follow in the footsteps of 19th century fossil hunter Mary Anning and visit the stunning Jurassic Coastline. Charmouth is one of the best locations and has regular fossil hunting guided tours.
  • Beaminster is close to both South Somerset and East Devon making it the perfect location to discover this part of the West Country.
  • Visit Mapperton House with its award-winning garden and re-wilding project. It’s the local stately home and film buffs may recognised it as the location for Carey Mulligan’s 2015 version of Thomas Hardy’s ‘Far from the Madding Crowd’.
