The Experience

Views soar up the Jurassic coast all the way to Chesil Beach and on to Portland Bill. It sits high on the hill with one foot in town and the other paddling in the water. Directly below, the Cobb curls into the sea. Outside, there’s a sun-trapping garden, where guests fall asleep in deckchairs, then a lookout tower with big sea views for a romantic dinner for two.

Inside, an easy elegance flows: stripped wood floors, windows everywhere, an airy bar for pre-dinner drinks, an attractive sitting room with lots of books. There’s a smart breakfast room (delicious continental or full English, smoked salmon with avocado, poached eggs) that could double as a ballroom, then a sun-filled conservatory for lunch, afternoon tea and dinner. Both offer tasty, local food – perhaps Lyme Bay scallops, chicken with cavolo nero, a white chocolate mousse.

Reviews

A lovely hotel in a beautiful location, friendly and helpful staff, a great welcome, very comfortable bedrooms and well equipped bathrooms, beautiful views of the gardens and Lyme Regis Bay. The food is excellent, plenty of choice and very well presented - excellent service, a wonderful breakfast buffet with cooked food to order as well, a very friendly, welcoming, unstuffy hotel in a lovely town. Plenty to do and see in the area - walks, swimming, kayaking, fishing trips and so on.

Our visit to the Alexandra Hotel exceeded our expectations. We received a warm welcome and staff were always helpful and friendly. Our room was lovely with a magnificent sea view. Breakfast was excellent and the atmosphere in the restaurant was peaceful and classy. We made full use of the beautiful grounds and appreciated the easy access to the sea front. We weren't able to park at the hotel due to the small number of spaces but parking was available nearby. Our trip was just for two nights but we came away feeling fully refreshed and with lovely memories.

Amazing hotel - great rooms and wonderful sea views. Excellent food. Friendly, efficient and helpful staff. I really cannot recommend this hotel enough. Charming.

Pat, London

This is a fabulous hotel. It has a lovely ambience and beautiful gardens with wonderful views. Although it is only a few minutes walk from the beach and town centre, with bars and restaurants, it is an oasis of calm. All the staff are wholly professional - friendly and efficient and keen to make your staff as enjoyable as possible. We only ate breakfast in the hotel but again the service was excellent and there was a wide range of quality options. The restaurant and conservatory are very attractive. We are already looking forward to our next stay at The Alexandra.

The Alexandra Hotel is a truly majestic establishment. As regular visitors we are always taken by the high level of service, quality of the food and general ambience. The 'Alex' always delivers and we can heartedly recommend the hotel, you will not be disappointed. A great place to enjoy the delights of Lyme Regis and the Jurassic coast.

Hamish, Reading

Excellent hotel, accommodation, staff, food and beautifully garden. Had a short break but will be returning.

Yvonne, Newport pagnell

The sea views from the room are gorgeous; terrific staff - all lovely, responsive, professional, and the hotel itself is charming. I love the dining room experience and the breakfasts are wonderful. I love nearly everything about the Alexandra in fact. A perfect day for me is eating one of their huge breakfasts, walking to Golden Cap and getting back in time for a long soak in the bath and an early supper. Bliss. The only downside is the infuriating milk sachets in the room that are too small and splash everywhere when opened. But to make up for that, the biscuits are superb.

Susan, Leamington Spa

We had just the most fabulous couple of nights at the Alexandra. It's conveniently situated in the heart of Lyme without feeling like it, and is beautifully appointed. Our bedroom had spectacular views of the bay and was comfortable and stylish. The food was great and the staff couldn't have been any friendlier or helpful.

Andy, Bridport

The Alexandra is a special family run hotel with a carefully maintained and innovative garden, gently sloping down to a beautiful panorama of Lyme Bay. The Hotel directly overlooks the historic Cobb protecting the harbor. The old building built in 1735 is full of character and unusual decor ideas. The staff were all helpful and friendly. For those with mobility problems there are ground floor rooms with a little patio looking out to the sea. The rooms are exceptionally well cleaned. The Alexandra follows a green agenda. I would thoroughly recommend a stay at this lovely place.

Charlotte, Exmoor

Recently spent 8 nights here on a Dinner, Bed & Breakfast basis & our experience was perfect - just perfect. From booking to checkout everything was handled remarkably well & nothing was too much trouble. The Staff, without exception, are welcoming, warm & friendly. The bedrooms are very well furnished & comfortable offering every conceivable luxury whilst not compromising the Hotel's environmentally friendly & highest of "green" standards. Breakfast, lunch & dinner are exceptional offering delicious well cooked & presented meals using the highest quality local produce. What's not to love!!

Sarah, Bath/Bristol

I spent a week at The Alexandra Hotel, Lyme Regis at the end of August/beginning of September. Staying at the Alexandra you are right in the centre of town with sea/beach and all amenities just outside. However, it's like staying at a comfy, country house hotel - peaceful and calm. All the staff were helpful and courteous and I felt appreciated as a guest. Dining in the conservatory was a lovely experience - food, service and atmosphere - perfect.

Barbara, Leeds

My wife and I enjoyed another return visit to The Alexandra Hotel in Lyme Regis. We have always been impressed by the helpfulness and courtesy of the Staff and we found that to be the case on this visit. The hotel is in a superb location on the Cliff top above Lyme Beach and the views are spectacular. Every room we have stayed in during our visits has been comfortable, spacious and well equipped. The Breakfasts and Dinners are very well prepared and served, and make delicious meals. We have already booked our next visit.

Ben, Bath

We had a wonderful stay at the beauiful Alexandra Hotel to celebrate a special birthday. Our room was extremely comfortable and we had a sea looking out over their garden. The staff were very welcoming and helpful. We had great meals in the light and airy restaurant. We couldn't have had a better stay and will return.

Celia, Bristol

The Alexandra Hotel & Restaurant benefits from beautiful architecture, charming gardens & grounds with commanding views of both the Cobb & Golden Cap & Jurassic coastline. There is a beautiful Dining Orangery, contemporary breakfast room, Lounge / drawing room and comfortable bedrooms with great views of the sea and coastline. Staff are polite & welcoming and it is one of the first things that you notice. If you are looking for something very special, with traditional values and exceptional hospitality, then, you have found it. Highly Recommended. Thank you to all the staff for their care.

Michael, Cambridge

Excellent staff, helpful, friendly receptionists and good service in the bar and dining room. Good quality, fresh food. Fabulous view over Lyme Regis from SV rooms and hotel gardens.

Doreen, Perranporth

I loved my stay at the Alexandra Hotel Lyme Regis. I had two rooms and my friend a third, and all were comfortable, clean, spacious, and each had a reading nook (where I nodded off each night). The staff is attentive and ready to help at any time. The breakfast was delicious—I chose Eggs Benedict, a dish I never fix at home. Over my time in Lyme Regis and London, I had fish and chips about four times and the Alexandra’s version was absolutely the best: the light, crisp batter with sea salt sprinkled over the top made this stand out over all the others. I highly recommend this hotel!

Melanie, Norman OK

A delightful place to stay and be looked after. A superb position looking out to sea over the hotel's extensive lawn and gardens. Most comfortable bedroom. Ask for one with a sea view if budget allows. Attentive, cheerful and most helpful staff, Relaxed and comfortable.

Chris, Westerham, Kent

A beautiful quintessentially English hotel, nearly 300 years old. Very welcoming with lovely staff and tastefully decorated. The atmosphere is understated and relaxed and fits perfectly with the stunning sea views over Lyme bay itself. My husband and I agreed it is one of the nicest hotels we have ever stayed in and we have been lucky enough to travel quite widely. We are very blessed that we live only an hour further along the coast and are already planning a return trip.

Tracy Katrina, Poole, Dorset

We were a party of 6 staying over the weekend to celebrate a big birthday and we had the most wonderful time. The staff in every section of the hotel are exceptional, so friendly and helpful. The food in the restaurant is outstanding, such a big choice, nothing was repeated over the three nights we were there.

Ian, Wimborne, Dorset

We had a fabulous stay at the Alexander Hotel, Lyme Regis. We could not fault it and definitely fell for Lyme Regis. The Hotel was so accommodating.

Location

The neighbourhood

You're within walking distance of all the shops and restaurants on the high street. The beach is a 2-minute walk for lovely picnics, swimming and paddle boarding, foraging for fossils. Sandy beaches are also nearby and you can join the Coast Path with a packed lunch ordered from the hotel. There are plenty of activities from January's costumed hurl into the sea to fireworks in November.
