The Experience

You’re looked after very well by a team of young, friendly staff. Bedrooms in the main house have Vi-spring mattresses, Nespresso machines and views over the garden; the lodges are slightly bigger and have armchairs looking over the lake and quacking ducks. You can have continental breakfast brought to you here or head to the main building for a feast: traditional porridge, granola with Greek yogurt, Cumberland sausages, posh baked beans or crushed avocado, buttermilk pancakes and veggie alternatives.

Wander down the garden to walk it off and meet plenty of chickens and peacocks on the way, or head to Dartmoor for rugged scenery, waterfalls, ponies and hiking. Trendy Totnes is 20 minutes in the car for shops, restaurants, good delis and pubs. Beaches are near.

Return to check out the menu here while supping a local ale: its’s posh pub grub (fish and chips etc) but with fusion dishes thrown in and very good steaks.

The team couldn't have been more welcoming or helpful. We had a wonderful sundowner in the garden, surrounded by the peacocks and their friends. A restful night's sleep followed in the very comfy bed, followed by an absolutely delicious breakfast!

Welcomed by the turning millwheel, I enjoyed strolling around the extensive grounds, meeting free-roaming chickens, ducks and even peacocks as I went. The beautiful lake at the bottom of the garden is a haven for wildlife. The staff were all friendly and welcoming and I enjoyed dinner in the cosy library close to the fire. Each room was well-appointed with thoughtful touches, quality interiors.

The neighbourhood

You're in easy reach of the South Devon coastline (an AONB) which has an abundance of fabulous beaches, towns and nature reserves. Visit Salcombe, Dartmouth, Thurlstone Hope Cove. Totnes has a market every Friday and Saturday, Buckfastleigh Abbey is 6.5 miles and there are courses to join at Dartington. Ben's Farm Shop is great for stocking up and the nearest train station is at Totnes.

Just fifteen minutes drive away is the bustling town of Totnes filled with independent shops and boutiques as well as cafes filled with interesting foods.
Exploring Dartmoor couldn't be easier using Turtley as your base, with rugged walks and waterfalls in abundance as well as many more accessible paths.
There are a multitude of National Trust properties within easy driving distance of Turtley, including Saltram and Greenway Houses. You can easily lose an afternoon enjoying their beautiful gardens and pottering around the houses when they are open.
If beaches are for you, then you will be spoilt for choice nearby to Turtley. From the beautiful tidal Mothecombe to the infamous Bigbury with Burgh Islands water tractor, they can be enjoyed in even the depths of Winter.
The beautiful Naval town of Dartmouth is just a twenty-five minute drive away. From there you can enjoy the coastal road to Blackpool Sands and Slapton Sands, location of the infamous rehearsals for the D-Day Landings.
Salcombe is a short drive away for one of the most beautiful estuaries in Devon. Park at North Sands to avoid the crowds and then wander along the coast into town.

It’s a family affair. Owners Bruce and Lesley are supported by their daughter Samantha. They’ve been running pubs in Devon since 2000 and like to create the sort of places to stay and eat which they enjoy themselves. They have long-standing relationships with local suppliers and a great team of staff.
