The Experience

There’s a pleasing informality to Sascha and Garth’s re-invention of the Royal George. Fresh food, skilfully cooked is at the heart of the affair – inventive dishes sit alongside some classics – but you don’t have to dress up, there are good options for your children and it’s fine to bring the dog.

Stay a few days to try excellent fish, Exmoor lamb, local pheasant, a great burger; good wines and a range of beers with a different local guest ale every week. Take one of the bedrooms, with sea-faring touches and, of course, those watery views, and you’re treated to a great breakfast; could be classic, could come with chilli and avocado. If you love the sourdough you can order a loaf to take home.

Walkers have the coast path, cyclists the Tarka Trail; surfers nearby Westward Ho! and Saunton; fisher-people can book a trip from the quay. Sandy Instow is across the estuary, so is Tapeley Park; Rosemoor Garden is half an hour’s drive.

Amazing spot, especially out of season. Room 1 was fantastic for a family of 4 - 2 bedrooms which ensures everyone gets a good sleep. Food delicious and service so friendly and welcoming. Also tried The Farmers Arms in Woolsery which was worth the 25min drive.

We managed to book a few days at The Royal George in Appledore. Never been there before but so pleased we found it. A rather special Inn right on the harbour side looking out to sea in all directions. Apparently it was almost derelict and very '70s'. But what a fabulous job the owners have done with the renovations. We were there for four nights and it's genuinely one of the most lovely places we've stayed. We would willingly return, the décor, location, views, the food, best breakfasts & lovely suite we stayed in (room 4) and the whole experience was just delightful!

This place is all about the sea - you can see it from every window, hear it from every bedroom, taste it in the amazing fish menu that Garth has created. When the tide's in, the sea laps inches below the huge picture windows in the restaurant; when it's out, you can walk down the slipway to the rocks and sandy banks below. Lovely rooms above and a gentle, buzzy vibe in the restaurant below.

Location

The neighbourhood

On a narrow lane of fisherman’s cottages, close to the SW Coast Path, the George is right on the estuary with views across to Saunton Sands. It’s a few minutes’ walk to Appledore’s quay area (good for crabbing), the Seagate Hotel restaurant, and the cafés, shops, pubs and galleries of the lanes behind; the Maritime Museum oversees the little town. It’s 3.5 miles to Bideford for the boat to Lundy

Appledore is the most doggy friendly place we know! We allow well behaved dogs in two of our rooms, and in our downstairs restaurant.
We're right on the South West Coast Path, follow the coast round for incredible views and beautiful walks.
We love to support small local businesses including breweries, and you'll see an ever changing list of beers available during your stay, showcasing the finest talent from around.
In the summer our local brass band play on the promenade every Monday, and the RNLI train on a Tuesday, you can see the RNLI going out whilst enjoying a delicious meal in our Restaurant.
The stunning Lundy Island, with its 4,000 years of human history, is a wonderful day trip from local port Bideford. The Island's own supply ship "MS Oldenburg" which transports day passengers retains much of its original charm.

While living in Hong Kong Garth and Sasha visited Appledore with their children and fell for the charms – some well-hidden at the time – of the Royal George. When it came on the market they snapped it up and began renovations. It’s been a huge project and the results are impressive. Their idea is to create experiences rather than just a place to eat and sleep – yoga and wellbeing weekends are planned…
