The Experience

Peace and quiet reign at your 19th-century barn, where nothing but birdsong disturbs you. Set among 28 acres of conservation land, including lakes, woods and meadows, it’s perfect for a close group of friends or a couple seeking a romantic break.

You’ll feel at home in the light-filled open-plan living/kitchen/dining area, its local fabrics and art adding character and the wood-burner making everything wonderfully cosy. Bedrooms (one king size, one twin) have gorgeous pure wool Devon duvets and line-dried sheets. They share a spotless modern shower room. The kitchen is well equipped and you’re left local milk and butter, home-baked bread, eggs, wine and snacks.

Dogs are welcomed with treats, towels and an outside shower for muddy days. Wander to the orchard (help yourselves to apples in season) then down to the lakes for a glass of wine and some bird spotting, or simply light the barbecue and sizzle something delicious for supper.

Reviews

We came in June and just couldn't wait to come back. Another recharge for body and soul. Beautiful to see everywhere in a different season. Elaine, Adrian and Ralph are perfect hosts - the apple cake and juice were wonderful. This really is a piece of heaven here in Devon, a five-star holiday.

I can recommend a stay at the Old Piggery without hesitation. The peace and quiet of the location was a delight and the basket of home made and locally sourced produce was very welcome on arrival. Having over 20 acres of grounds to walk around on the doorstep was ideal. The cottage has been wonderfully renovated and equipped and the hosts have thought of everything you’d need. Adrian, Elaine and Ralph, their pet Lurcher, were fantastic hosts who struck the right balance between being on hand if needed but leaving you to enjoy the farm’s amenities if that’s your preference. 10/10.

Paul, Cottingham

So peaceful, so comfortable – and especially wildlife-friendly. I’d love to stay and watch for badgers and barn owls...

Annie, Sawday's Inspector

Highly recommended without hesitation. The Piggery is of a truly exceptional standard. It is cosy in the winter but cool in the summer. The bedding is amazing & feels like pure luxury. The kitchen has obviously been kitted out by someone who knows how to cook and everywhere is extremely clean. The welcome package is beyond expectations with home made bread, scones & nibbles & many other locally produced items. Elaine, Adrian & Ralph are the perfect hosts with the ultimate balance of being on hand if needed but also leaving you to enjoy your holiday and their local knowledge is invaluable.

A big thank you to Elaine, Adrian and Ralph who have made us feel most welcome. From the freshly baked bread, scones and doggy biscuits to the most special, peaceful location. Thank you for such a restful break. The dogs have loved the freedom of the beaches, and we very much appreciate that you allow dogs in your properties. Extremely well-equipped cottage with quality furnishings. Would definitely recommend to family and friends.

We spent a week in The Old Piggery. We arrived to homemade bread, scones and jam (and other delicious things too). It’s cosy but not cramped and very comfortable. We felt very cared for and Elaine and Adrian had really thought about what makes a great holiday stay. But also with care and consideration for the environment. It is a haven and so tranquil. We have a dog and she was made very welcome. Especially by Ralph, the handsome lurcher. Walks and great pubs close by. Would we visit again? Yes, most definitely.

Carol, Huddersfield

We had the most wonderful stay at this exceptionally lovely cottage in Devon. Attention to detail was taken to the next level with homemade bread, scones, butter, milk and jam ready on arrival, kindling and wood all laid up for what was the cosiest stay possible. Super attention to the sustainable aspect of living and lovely walks to do both on and off the property. Thank you so much to Adrian, Elaine and Ralph for making us so very very welcome. We will be back!

We had a lovely stay at The Old Piggery. It is a comfortable, fully and attractively furnished cottage with lots of privacy. Elaine and Arnold make sure you want for nothing. The site is a great base for exploring the north coast of Devon and Cornwall

Greetje, Zwolle

What a gem! A place of absolute peace and quiet apart from birdsong and occasional baas from Dylan and Wonky, the sheep. The Old Piggery is a perfect base from which to explore the area and magnificent coastline. The attention to detail in the cottage is fantastic and very much appreciated. Elaine and Adrian are exceptional hosts who provided us with lots of local information. Their wide ranging combined talents are impressive - from land regeneration to soap making and a great deal more in between. Our only regret was that we had to leave!

We enjoyed a fabulous 5 night stay in the Old Piggery. Really comfortable, very well appointed and immaculately clean. The owners are delightful and very helpful. A very comprehensive welcome pack, which included: homemade scones cream tea, bread, milk and a bottle of wine. It was great to be able to just walk out the door with our dogs and explore acres of woodland, ponds and fields. Great position for the coast and beaches. Highly recommended!

Adrian, Oving, Bucks

Absolutely gorgeous cottage in the most peaceful setting, you really couldn't wish for more. The cottage itself is tastefully furnished and super comfy; the best nights sleep we've had in a long time! Based in a small hamlet 15 minutes away from Bideford, Kerswell is an ideal base for exploring the North Devon coast. Elaine, Adrian and Ralph the Lurcher were friendly hosts and the cream tea on arrival was most welcome after a long drive, as were the goodies which were also waiting for us. Did not want to come home and would not hesitate to recommend.

Theresa, Southampton

Absolutely delightful. Elaine and Adrian have created a conservation haven, and were exceptional hosts. The Piggery was beautifully designed and well equipped, and the walks around the property were stunning. A peaceful and relaxing place to stay.

What a wonderful place to spend a holiday. The Old Piggery is a high spec and tastefully decorated cottage, the hosts are welcoming, thoughtful and considerate and the setting is amazing. It was a delight watching the huge variety of birds on the feeder and exploring the extensive grounds: ponds, woodland and restored meadows. In addition there are lots of interesting places to visit nearby. We are looking forward to a return visit. Highly recommended.

What a peaceful week! We stayed in the Old Piggery at Kerswell farm in North Devon in July. This beautifully converted farm building provided for our every need and comfort, as did our delightful hosts. The conservation land around us was lush and green. The lakes, with water lilies, dragonflies and the occasional splash of fish were idyllic. While the meadows, full of wildflowers, including orchids, showed us nature at its best. The birdsong was a joy, as we watched the birds coming and going. The lazy, hazy days of summer at the piggery passed all too quickly, but we will be back!

Carrie, Budleigh Salterton, East Devon

Only five days and absolutely not long enough. There is so much to do in the area from coastal walks to crabbing in nearby Appledore and on top of that you don't really want to leave the comfort of The Old Piggery. Beautiful and peaceful surrounds and fabulous accommodation. Incredibly well laid out, immaculate, amazing bedding, a delicious cream tea on arrival, and everything you could want outside as well as in. Friendly hosts where nothing was too much trouble. Can't wait to go back!

Susan, London

We had a utterly superb time staying for a week at The Old Piggery. The cottage was superbly equipped with everything and more you could wish for, the beds were incredibly comfortable and Elaine and Adrian fabulous hosts. We enjoyed relaxing walks around the grounds, while the information pack was full of information with spot on recommendations. We used it as our tour guide, taking us to fabulous beaches, villages and walks. As strongly recommended we requested Elaine cook a dinner for us and we could see why this is so strongly advised - a truly sensational dinner. Utterly superb.

Gary, Gerrards Cross

We had booked our stay at The Old Piggery before Covid took hold and as our arrival date coincided with the relaxation of lockdown restrictions we wondered how things would go . However Elaine kept us regularly updated and informed about the measures that had been put in place to keep everyone safe and all went smoothly. Everywhere was spotlessly clean with plenty of soap, hot water and hand sanitiser. We were even able to sample Elaine's superb cooking with socially distanced dishing up through the door. Not only high quality accommodation but safe as well. Thank you Elaine and Adrian

Veronica, Eastbourne

What a beautiful place to stay. The cottage is done up to a supremely high standard and is as cosy as can be. The area has plenty of great walking, and is so well located for beaches and beautiful countryside. Elaine and Adrian (and Ralph!!) were so welcoming. We're already planning our next visit!
