The Experience
A small house above the sea with fabulous views, super bedrooms and some of the loveliest food in Devon. Despite these credentials, it’s Martyn and Petra who shine most brightly, their kind, generous approach making this a memorable place to stay. Warm interiors have wooden floors, Lloyd Loom furniture, the odd potted palm, then big windows to frame the view. Below, the Avon estuary slips gracefully out to sea. At high tide surfers ride the waves, at low tide you can walk on the sands. There’s a pretty garden with a path tumbling down to the beach, binoculars in each room, a wood-burner in the snug and good books everywhere. Warm colours, crisp linen, tongue-and-groove panelling and robes in super little bathrooms. As for Martyn’s table d’hôte dinners, expect to eat very well. Fish comes daily from Kingsbridge market, you might find grilled figs with goat’s cheese and Parma ham, roast monkfish with a lobster sauce, then hot chocolate soufflé with fresh raspberries. Better than the Ritz!

We already know that this will be the first of many stays at The Henley. We were booked for last March, but lockdown meant a six-month postponement; it was definitely worth the wait. We loved our room, with its stunning double aspect views. The dining-room and lounges are comfortable and stylish, and it would be easy to while away the hours just watching the tide and the light on the estuary. Petra and Martin are the friendliest of hosts, and nothing is too much trouble. Martin's cooking is outstanding: breakfasts are sumptuous, and dinner was delicious. Highly recommended.

Just wanted to say what a wonderful stay we had at The Henley. The weather was gorgeous, our hosts incredibly kind and accommodating, the dog loved it, the views spectacular, the rooms spotless and Martin's food was simple and delicious. All in all a wonderful and relaxing few days.

Just back from The Henley, stayed with the dog in a lovely room and wonderful food. Great walks along the beach and across to Burgh Island. Matthew and Petra and Casper the Labrador wonderful hosts. We had a dog as did all the other guests but don't worry if you don't have one I am sure you can borrow Casper. Unfortunately now closed for the Winter but we shall be booking again in the Spring.

We had a splendid week in delightful surroundings together with delightful hosts, The setting overlooking the estuary was incredible, the Devon drivers were amazingly patient on their narrow roads and the gastronomic meals matched those that we had enjoyed earlier in the year at a large hotel in France. The only problem was of our own retirement making because we booked Saturday to Saturday in August forgetting about the rush down the M5 over August weekends
