The Experience
It’s like a medieval hamlet: the pub is the beating heart where fabulous food is enjoyed from local and seasonal ingredients – a lot from their farm where they rear rare English heritage breed pigs, sheep and chickens. Even breakfast is incredibly thoughtful, with joyous-sounding side dishes like dog rose honey and pistachio bun, and scrumptious mains.
Fanning out from this building are three lovely cottages and four beautiful rooms. Beds are sumptuous, bathrooms have Land & Water soaps and lotions and there are kitchens in the cottages. The rooms above the shop have a communal first-floor balcony with views over rooftops out to the moors.
Glorious to walk the South West Coast Path all day then settle in with a hand-pumped ale or a glass of wine while you decide what to eat. Birch Farm pork, Exmoor short rib and delectable Birch Farm homemade charcuterie with cultured butter – food doesn’t get much better than this.

Location
The neighbourhood
You're halfway between Bideford and Bude, just a few miles off the Atlantic highway. The village is small but bustling with the pub, the shop and also the excellent fish and chip shop. The unique village of Clovelly is an eight-minute drive – you need to park the car at the top then walk down and back up again. Hartland Point is glorious for walks, swims and general beachy stuff with grand sunsets.
Local points of interest from Emily Harmon
- Ask for a farm tour at our own 150 acre Birch Farm. Featured on Gardener's World, in Garden's Illustrated and many more. If interested in sustainability, natural farming or agroforestry (or just a lovely stroll around the farm) then speak to reception.
- We are only 3 miles from the coast, where you can jump on the South West Coast Path for a scenic (and often challenging) stroll. Let us know what level and length you would like to tackle, and we will send you in the right direction.
- Up for some wild swimming in the bracing North Devon coastal waters? Take a drive over to Westward Ho! or Bude for some laps in the Victorian tidal swimming pools, or hike off to more remote beaches like Blackchurch Rock for surf that's a bit more "wild".
- Head off to Tintagel for a delve into historical castle ruins! Rumoured to be the seat of King Arthur himself, be sure to check out Merlin's cave on your hike through the site. And stop off at the Museum of Witchcraft and Magic in Boscastle on your way!
- The Valley of the Rocks, near the charming towns of Lynton and Lynmouth, will awe with its rock formations and cliff hanging trails. After your hike, take the Cliff Railway down and enjoy a beverage or check out shops like Pickles and Peculiar Things.
- Check out our Events page on our website, where we put not only the amazing dinners, workshops, farm days and more here in Woolsery, but also things of interest happening all over North Devon!

I was sad to leave after one night... the food, the attention to detail, the story, the comfort and the service made it all very memorable. It's a fantastic project with a great story, Emily breathes enthusiasm and she's made the Woolsery collective a memorable place to stop on the way to Cornwall or a base to explore North Devon.
