The Experience

Downstairs, a fire smoulders in the sitting-room bar; upstairs, fine Georgian windows frame views of hill and forest. Bedrooms, all upstairs and named after cocktails, are full of comforts. They come with excellent bathrooms, lovely beds, crisp linen and warm colours. You get padded bedheads, sound systems, bowls of fruit, white robes to pad about in. Back downstairs, you’ll succumb to a pre-dinner drink – in front of the fire in the bar in winter, out on the terrace in summer beside a glorious wisteria.

Richard’s food bursts with flavour, so expect to eat well with soft fruits, vegetables and potatoes from the garden in summer and home-laid eggs at breakfast. Read the papers while you start on cereals, nuts and fruit or order a full English made to order using local ingredients.

Walk it off with a stroll along the river Erme which flows along just over the road. Follow it down to the sea and discover sheltered sands at Wonwell.

Reviews

We booked on recommendation for a friends wedding and without knowing this is a Sawdays hotel. Without doubt the best small hotel we've ever stayed in! On whatever scale you judge: room, cleanliness, staff, facilities, it scores top marks. A real credit to the owners and their staff. And the food!! A wonderful 2 night stay in perfect accommodation. Thank you.

Richard and his well trained and attentive staff made our stay a highlight of our first post-lockdown visit to England and friends. The location is excellent fo exploring the South Coast, Plymouth, and Dartmoor. Our room (#12) was cozy and pleasant. Breakfast is a treat, ordered beforehand and served at table in the morning while dinners are locally sourced and beautifully cooked and presented, with a well thought-out (and reasonably priced) wine list. The bar includes one of the best selections of single malts south of the Tweed! We look forward to returning.

An absolute treat... Richard and his team were gracious and accommodating when one became two at very short notice and the length of our stay altered... We arrived 'after diner' and were still warmly welcomed and willingly very well fed. The Moules Bouillabaisse is superb as is the John Dory on risotto. Location is tranquil... with a discrete terrace for reading. Ideal location for walkers, surfers and divers to base themselves. Comfortable beds and oodles of hot water... Richard's team is a credit to him. An unfussy and elegant escape... which will be returned to before the Summer is out

We had invited 14 friends to join us to celebrate Paul's 50th birthday. We couldn't have picked a better venue! We had drinks in the elegant bar before heading to our own dining room for our meal which was superb! We couldn't fault the accommodation which was spotless, serene and beautifully appointed. The attention to detail and extra touches provided were worthy of five star accommodation in London. Robes, bottles of water, a basket of fruit and snacks placed on the rattan coffee table and comfortable chairs from which we could take in the gorgeous Devon Countryside made our weekend special.

Location

The neighbourhood

Walkers can head to Dartmoor in the north (a 10-minute drive) or join the South West Coast Path from the river estuary. This whole area is an AONB with rolling hills, sandy surfing beaches like Bantham, sailing at Salcombe and plenty of National Trust houses and gardens to visit. Saltram House and Park is particularly lovely. Plymouth is a 20-minute drive for maritime history, theatres and shops.

Local points of interest from Richard Hendey

  • A stunning riverside walk starts at the bottom of our drive. 50 minutes of pure nature and two stone bridges to cross.
  • The wilderness of Dartmoor is less than ten minutes from our door.
  • Our river Erme meets the sea at Wonwell and Mothercombe beaches; walkable from us. Or drive a little further to a stunning array of fabulous beaches for bathing, surfing or utter tranquility.
  • With a therapy room on the second floor, our resident masseuse Miss Sharon Denmead offers sublime treatments for our guests. Advance bookings essential.
  • Situated in an AONB, Plantation House is within a short drive of umpteen charming market towns. Enjoy a day's strolling and exploring and then return for a dinner that we promise will make you smile with delight.
