The Experience
There’s a special quality to the light here and soul-soothing views to the sea framed by Jacobean-style windows and from the south-facing garden below these smart apartments. Take all three for a grand group gathering – don’t fight over Bliss with its free-standing bath on a heated plinth – catering, music etc can be arranged in the big ballroom, no problem.
Take a stroll in the grounds and smell the roses, snooze in the swinging seat; plan a barbecue or an evening by the fire pit. Children run free, feed the animals, craft driftwood.
A lovely cross-country walk brings you to golden Putsborough Sands – it’s fine to borrow a board or a wetsuit. Stride out on the SW Coast Path or pootle to one of the foodie village pubs. There’s good food too in Braunton, Ilfracombe and Woolacombe. Each apartment has a tablet with the latest info.

Location
The neighbourhood
You’re surrounded by fields and narrow country lanes, and a stroll downhill reveals Putsborough Beach: 2 miles of golden sands with Woolacombe at the far end. Surfy Croyde is 2.5 miles away and Braunton, 4 miles away, is good for supplies, cafés and restaurants too. You can be in Ilfracombe in 20 minutes to catch the ferry to Lundy, but if you’d rather stay on terra firma, the wilds of Exmoor are a 15-mile drive inland
Local points of interest from Simon & Julia Hawthorne
- We are lucky enough to be only a 5min (depending on traffic) drive from Putsbourgh beach. This amazing sandy beach stretches 2.5miles to Woolacombe beach. These & nearby Croyde beach are a must visit
- Another nearby beach is Lee bay - a great one for rock pools and at low tide you can take the smugglers path through the rocks to a hidden sandy beach. As this beach is not golden yellow sand and hidden away it rarely gets busy.
- We are just off the coastal path, so loads of amazing walks along cliffs and beaches
- Activities on our doorstep: Surfing, Stand Up Paddleboarding, wild swimming, coasteering and so much more.....
- You are spoilt for choice when it comes to eating out. We have two great pubs in the village that do superb food. Or a more alfresco style option is the amazing Sri Lankan curry at nearby Barricane beach.

Introducing
Simon & Julia Hawthorne
The estate is owned by two families, the Elliots and the Bakers. They’ve gradually transformed the manor and estate buildings into a range of quirky, comfortable places to stay. The emphasis is on sustainability, including biomass boilers, bore hole water and waste recycling. The estate’s profits fund the Pickwell Foundation, which gives grants to climate change and refugee charities. You’ll be looked after by friendly managers Simon and Julia.
There's a sense of peace about this place, with tranquil views over farmland to the sea from the flowery lawned garden. The apartments combine contemporary style with the traditional structure of the building - it feels opulent and comfortable; smart but not formal.
