The Experience

Devon lanes weave through creek-side villages from Totnes, finally opening to the boat-bobbed Dart, shimmering on a summer’s day. Then, at the end of a half-mile drive fringed with fields you reach Riverside Farm, home to managed sheep and woodland. Orchard House, newly built with local stone and Delabole roofing slates, and Cider Barn, a clever conversion, are named after the apple trees that once stood here. The friendly owners and the farm manager live on site, show you around and then leave you in peace. Inside is spacious, hi-spec, open plan and awash with light, from the kitchens for wannabe Nigellas to the large rain showers and ‘his and her’ sinks upstairs. Anyone who loves water will love it here; the boats and the estuary are ever in view and each window captures a different angle. What’s more, the path outside winds down from the garden to a private jetty (bring canoes!). Browse the shops of arty Totnes, cruise down the Dart on a coal-fired steamer, hail the Dittisham ferry to Agatha Christie’s house. Then it’s back to a barbecue and drinks with a view – or crumpets by the wood-burner.

Reviews

Beautiful house, immaculately designed and fitted out, in a most beautiful part of the world. The owners and their housekeepers/gardeners have created a perfect place for a family holiday in this most perfect setting.

Cider Barn is one of two properties on Riverside Farm, sheltered at the bottom of steep rolling hills. It’s a quietly amazing place and the Barn, which was an old cider press, has been stunningly converted so the main room and the top bedroom face directly out onto a glass wall and balcony overlooking the river Dart - all you see is water and trees, a few boats and lots of birds. It’s breathtaking, especially in the early morning and the evening when the sun shines in. The house is beautifully appointed and extremely comfortable and - a big plus for us - has an old piano. Magical!

My wife and I and a close friend had a very happy week at Orchard House at the beginning of March. The house is very well appointed, the views over the River Dart fabulous and generally everything works well and it felt like a 'home from home' holiday. The log burning stove and ample supply of kindling and logs was particularly lovely. We would highly recommend a visit.

We had a lovely time at Orchard House. On our arrival the property was presented to an excellent standard, we wanted for nothing, thank you. We loved the setting and the local walking, it was good to get the heart rate to maximum at the start of the walk by climbing up the driveway, loved it all. We walked everyday, the highlights were the walk to and from Dartmouth on both banks of the river Dart and also the coastal walk from Dartmouth to Brixham, stunning. The house is spacious, very well presented and has a good feel about it. The setting is beautiful. Some lovely local villages with pub

Delightful beautifully accommodated house in an idyllic location.

We stayed in Cider Barn in July.We were greeted by Donna the very friendly housekeeper. Both Donna & her husband were very friendly & helpful throughout our stay as was Mrs Tuppen the owner. Cider Barn is a very beautiful property situated right on the water in a very peaceful part of the River Dart with lots of wildlife to observe particularly when the tide is out. The property is very well equipped and beautifully furnished. We had a wonderful 2 weeks here and didn’t want to leave. It’s probably one of the loveliest holiday houses we’ve ever stayed in.

We have had several days at Orchard House, Riverside Farm. We love it, and look forward to returning! The house is beautiful and spacious, and very well equipped. The outside space and views are just glorious. A little piece of heaven! The onsite team are warm and helpful, and the owners also welcome and are very responsive to any feedback.

Amanda, London

This was our second stay at Cider Barn because it’s truly wonderful. Driving down to the property with amazing views of the River Dart is very memorable. The barn is spacious, has lovely views and a very comfortable interior. The barn is very well equipped for proper cooking and a large dining table for meals with a large group of people. Everybody we met was very friendly and helpful, but left us in peace at the same time.

Eva, London

What a wonderful place. Beautiful setting and during bad weather we had a good excuse to stay in and enjoy the comforts of Orchard House. Thoroughly recommend it and will return when I can.

Kate, East Molesey

Beautiful location with great views over the Dart, a lovely open plan space with every need catered for. Warm and cosy in winter with log burner, seating outside on a sunny day. Fantastic Riverside Farm welcome pack. Comfortable beds and great showers, altogether a great place to stay. We would definitely recommend it and would like to return for another visit.
