The Experience
Pretty South Pool sits at the head of a creek with the brook running through it, which you cross via an ancient stone bridge – it’s ideal for proper English seaside holidays, so gather friends, family and the dog and head here. Your base is one half of a superbly-converted barn with a stylish open-plan living area, beams and oak flooring, comfy sofa (which converts to an extra bed), a pretty garden, good artwork and a smart TV for lazy days.
The kitchen oozes bells and whistles but the pub is temptingly close serving barbecue lunches in summer and amazing evening meals and Sunday lunches all year round. Chef Iain is a whizz with cooking over fire with meat and vegetables straight from the farm and fish from the day boats. Their own cider on tap and 150 bins from small producers make it irresistible.
Join the Coast Path, walk your socks off, return to hot showers, a hearty supper and handcrafted beds.

Location
The neighbourhood
You're in a tiny village of thatched cottages in an AONB so nature lovers and birdwatchers will be out all day - no light pollution means star gazers will be happy too. Kingsbridge is five miles, a small market town well supplied with delis, coffee shops, good fishmonger and The Salcombe Bakehouse for wonderful bread. There are many sandy beaches nearby, catch a ferry to Salcombe, rent bikes.
Local points of interest from Caitlin Owens
- We like to talk about The Millbrook Inn as being between Land and Sea. We have a unique setting, ambience and culture that sits between the idyllic rural and the rugged maritime. Each of our cottages celebrates one half of our culture.
- All of the taps at The Millbrook Inn come from small, independent brewers from within Devon. The smallest and most independent of them all is Auld Jolene, our homemade cider made with the apples picked by hand from our own organic, ancient cider orchards.
- The Millbrook's head chef likes to be known as Big Smoke, and there isn't much that comes off our family farm that he hasn't tried smoking or barbecuing. Whatever the season, there's bound to be some outdoor cooking action to watch from your window.
- We are less than 15 minutes from many varied beaches. Choose East Portlemouth for soft golden sand and clear, safe water, Rickham or Lannacombe for wild Atlantic swells and Great Mattiscombe for massive sunsets and multiple seal colonies.
- Staying in South Pool is sure to set your inner tidal clock. The village operates to a different, more elemental rhythm, with the tide defining walking and driving routes, ferries, pub events and beaches. You'll find yourself perfectly tuned in no time.
- Venture to Totnes for vintage boutiques, market, craft breweries and top coffee, or across to Dartmouth, an old naval port complete with castle, assorted ferries, a steam train and antique shops of military curiosities. And fish and chips, as you'd expect.

Introducing
Caitlin Owens
Caitlin and her family manage an organic farm nearby and produce 70% of the meat and vegetables for the pub. They also bought a charcuterie business and produce salamis and cured meats which are available for you to eat and to take home. They are passionate about sustainable farming and Pasture for Life. Chef Iain cooks like a dreamboat and the welcoming team look after you beautifully.
No expense has been spared in this immaculate, nautically themed barn conversion. Prestigious appliances, I loved the drawer style dishwasher and the boiling water tap, luxurious handmade beds with beautiful white bed linen, fluffy towels, and bath robes to snuggle in, and a great welcome hamper with everything needed to make a sausage sandwich, perfect for breakfast or a late night snack.
