A Derbyshire longhouse in Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre country built by a man called George Eyre. The position is unbeatable – field, river, hill, sky – but the star of the show is Vivienne, a dab hand at spoiling guests rotten. There’s a big sitting room with maps for walkers, a dining room hall for hearty breakfasts, and tables and chairs scattered about the garden. Back inside, bedrooms vary in size, but all have super beds, goose down duvets and stunning views; a couple have doors onto the garden, the suites have proper sitting rooms. Fantastic walks start from the front door, Castleton Caves are on the doorstep and Chatsworth is close.
We had a very enjoyable stay in a comfortable room with a wide range of facilities. Breakfast was delicious with an extensive and unusual choice and cheerful service.
