The Experience

A smart and stylish gastropub facing the village green, with a friendly welcome, set deep in the South Derbyshire countryside. Step inside to where the copper-topped bar gleams and the fire leaps in the old stone fireplace. Perch on an upcycled milk churn to down a pint of local ale and choose from a superb menu with fresh fish and seafood delivered overnight from Cornwall. Spend relaxed sunny evenings dining in the orangery.

Bedrooms, some up, some down, have padded headboards, plump cushions, gleaming linens, hi-tech touches and a warm glow from clever lighting. Bathrooms sparkle and have attractive stone basins. Breakfast will set you up for a day of exploring the Dales. Sausages and bacon are from Derbyshire, hash browns are homemade, you can tuck into kippers with poached eggs or The Cow fishcake.

Walk it all off in gorgeous countryside, or admire the little villages with vast views in Derbyshire’s Golden Triangle.

Reviews

Stayed in room 8 with very comfortable bed. Food was rather exciting with small plates to share. Perfect for me as I can never make up my mind. We were lucky on arrival to find they had an open afternoon with cakes and tea. Scrumptious scones. Next morning we had haddock and poached egg for breakfast. They were so kind in posting back my watch which I left somewhere in the room. Only 1 comment that they may want to consider. They may want to consider making it clear on the website that breakfast is indeed included as It could put folk off from booking a romantic getaway

Stayed overnight en route back to the Northwest from Suffolk. Welcoming, great atmosphere and lovely comfortable room with many extra touches like a small bottle of milk in fridge. Best bed we have slept in for ages. Quiet location. The food was unexpectedly innovative with ‘small plates’ - five between two were plenty- the home made pork scratchings were delicious and sinful, the home made scotch egg really tasty. Breakfast equally good and freshly cooked to order.

Location

The neighbourhood

You're in a sleepy hamlet down a network of lanes in gentle countryside. Ashbourne is 20 minutes away and has 200 listed buildings and some superb independent shops plus a weekly open-air market. It's also at the start of the Tissington Trail, gateway to Dovedale and the Pennine Bridleway. Explore Chatsworth, Haddon Hall and Kedleston Hall, or head to Carsington Water for boating and fishing.

Local points of interest from Fran Thacker

  • Chatsworth is described by many as the Palace in the Peaks and well worth a visit, with its fascinating and beautiful gardens, one of the most opulent stately homes in the North of England where deer can be seen roaming freely amongst the backdrop.
  • Matlock Bath is a popular destination for families, bikers and fun seekers, with a wide a variety of things to do; An exciting cable car ride takes you up to The Heights of Abraham, where the wooded country park is crowned with the Victoria Prospect Tower.
  • Kedleston Hall is a spectacular Neo-classical mansion, framed by historic parkland. Designed for lavish entertaining and displaying an extensive collection of paintings, sculpture and original furnishings. A fun day out exploring the parkland and house.
  • Perhaps best known for its unique and delicious pudding. Bakewell has many more tempting treats to offer - ranging from shopping and specialist markets to relaxing strolls and special events.
  • Discover the beauty of Haddon Hall, just a 45 minute drive from Derby and described as “the most romantic house to survive from the middle ages”. Set in the heart of the beautiful Peak District National Park overlooking the River Wye.
  • Dovedale is known for the River Dove and it’s impressive limestone ravines, but the most iconic part of the trip has to be the picturesque stepping stones. With hike-worthy views this destination is sure to impress those longing for adventure.
