The Experience

Many little gates lead to your own porch and then an open plan room in rich, restful colours and with glorious views over the hillside. A big wood-burner with an unlimited log supply makes sure you stay cosy, Swedish cushions and throws add charm and the lighting is thoughtful. A barn sliding door leads to a good-sized kitchen with all you need, plus milk from the local dairy, fresh eggs, one of Lou’s home baked cakes and a bottle of wine.

A bird feeder in your enclosed gravel garden attracts all the usual suspects but also woodpeckers, nuthatches and you may even catch a glimpse of the resident sparrowhawk. From here you can walk straight into the mixed woodland surrounding you, mainly Ash and Rhododendron – magnificent in spring. For longer walks join the Limestone Way, 46 miles of challenging moorland with rivers to cross.

Return to two neat-as-a-pin bedrooms with crisp bedding, Velux windows for stargazing and scented French soap for the shower.

Reviews

What a perfect cottage and location. Lou and Al are lovely hosts. Excellent.

Clare, Harpenden

Small but perfectly formed is the best description of this charming cottage. Three of us were so comfortable over the 4 days we stayed. Everything is thought out for comfort and the maps and details of where to eat were expertly throught through. The owners couldn't have been more helpful, the setting is so peaceful, and there are wonderful walks from the door. Millers Dale is a very good base in wet weather too - we explored Haddon Hall, Hardwick Hall and Chatsworth on the two wet days we had. Tideswell, the nearest village, offers almost everything, including a top notch second-hand bookshop

Simone, Templecombe

We enjoyed our 4th stay at Little Bank and we haven’t got bored of it! It’s so cosy and warm. When you are on a long walk you can always look forward to coming back. While we eat breakfast we look out of the window to see lots of birds. THANK YOU! (Matilda, aged 10)

Cannot fault the cottage, so beautiful and comfortable, a real home from home. Al and Lou were amazing hosts, and made us feel at home immediately (three sisters travelling!) with fantastic touches like wine and fresh eggs and Al’s brilliant skills at lighting the fire for us… On top of that the walks from the cottage were absolutely stunning, no car needed to enjoy the beautiful scenery of the peaks! The Monsal Trail (among many others) starts from the cottage and was beautiful…from here you can also walk to Buxton and Castleton…just perfect! We loved everything about it!

Toni, London

We loved our stay in this comfortable, cosy, very stylish and well equipped cottage. The wonderful owners Lou and Al were super helpful with advice and suggestions and the property is very well located in the centre of the Peak district with beautiful walks from the door. A very special place to stay.

Steve, Kingston Upon Thames

This lovely cottage is very well appointed and in a beautiful setting, and Lou and Al are excellent hosts - so welcoming and helpful. There's lots of kitchen equipment and the bed linen is high quality. We loved the artwork decorating the walls. We made great use of the gravel garden, eating most of our meals on the picnic table and spending evenings sitting round the firepit. It's hardly necessary to use the car - so many fabulous walks straight from the door in this is glorious part of the Peak District.

Rachel, Twickenham

We had a lovely weekend in this comfortable and stylish cottage, and appreciated all the welcoming touches. Walks from the door are amazing - we especially enjoyed walking up Chee Dale, where we had a close encounter with a heron. The walk was so varied in scenery but beautiful all the way. Another walk up Monsal Dale was equally gorgeous.

Kate, York

The cottage was the perfect place to see in the new year - lots of different walks straight from the garden and a wood burner to return to at the end of the day. The cottage itself was really thoughtfully designed, and we were given such a warm welcome by the hosts Lou and Al (including a freshly made Bakewell tart!). We’ve already planned a longer return visit.

Mark, Oxford

I stayed in Little Bank with 2 friends and I can’t recommend it enough. Lou and Al were absolutely fantastic hosts. We arrived at the beautiful cottage to a homemade Bakewell tart and a bottle of red wine. We woke up to snow on our first morning…and a power cut! But Lou and Al couldn’t do enough to make us feel comfortable and looked after. Wood for the log fire brought to us; kettles of boiling water for hot drinks; offers of lifts to places to eat should we have wanted. But if anything the power cut gave us our ‘get away from it all’ weekend we actually wanted so thank you!

Katy, Watford

We had such a great week at Little Bank. It is a lovely wee cottage, thoughtfully designed and landscaped. As a result it is very comfortable to stay in. However it was the hospitality of Lou and Al that we will remember. We felt very spoiled by the homemade gluten free cake and lovely wine. I had forgotten how lovely Derbyshire is and the cottage is in a great spot to see local towns, villages and special places like Chatsworth. There are also lots of lovely walks close to the cottage and a little further afield.

Eleanor, Edinburgh

Lovely accommodation in a great location. Hosts Lou and Alan made us most welcome and were very helpful with walks, things to do and where to eat. Bank Cottage was well equipped and delightfully decorated. We would definitely return as we so enjoyed our time there.

David and Sue, Caterham

Lovely cottage in a beautiful location, with lots of thoughtful touches which really make it special. Alan and Lou are the perfect hosts, and go out of their way to ensure you enjoy your stay.

Charlotte, St Albans

We couldn't have had a nicer stay at Little Bank. Like staying in a luxury hotel, with the added bonus of lovely living area and fully equipped kitchen, the cottage was very comfortable and spotlessly clean. There was a lot to do and see in the surrounding area and the owners super helpful.

Eva, London

Little Bank is just the perfect cottage! Lou and Al have thought of everything: the place is cute and comfortable, with loads of thoughtful details. They’re lovely warm hosts too. The cottage is brilliantly situated for exploring the Peak District, with pretty much everywhere you could wish to visit within a 25 minute drive (Kinder Scout, Chatsworth and Chrome Hill to name just a few). And if you don’t fancy a drive, there are loads of beautiful walks in the local area too. Very much recommended! We can’t wait to go back.

Katherine, Bristol

What a gem Little Bank is! We had a lovely break. Lou and Alan have created a beautifully thought out space, in and out Tasteful, spotless, comfy beds and lovely linen. They have thought of everything We enjoyed wonderful walks from the doorstep and our generous hosts suggested lots of ideas for other activities. Always helpful but unobtrusive A wonderful stay, helped by gorgeous weather!

Andy and Eunice, Suffolk

Such a lovely, cosy and stylish cottage in a beautiful location. Lou and Al were great hosts and added such thoughtful touches to make our stay so special. The garden and fire pit are a fantastic bonus and much enjoyed by the boys - big and small! The perfect Peak District retreat - we will be back!

Mark, London

We felt privileged to be the first guests to stay in this cosy + comfortable cottage following its renovation. We received a warm + friendly welcome from our wonderful hosts who were accommodating + helpful with information and advice about the activities on hand in the area. The cottage is comfortable + well-appointed with every detail carefully thought out by Alan + Lou, making this a very special and relaxing place to stay. Surrounded by walks and cycle rides in strikingly beautiful landscapes, but also easily accessible, this is the perfect place for a family holiday. Highly recommended!

Daniel, Thao, Edward & Richard

Pack up your troubles and head for the glorious Peak District. This is a great starting point, a super comfy place to come home to, and owner Alan can give keen fell climbers, cyclists and walkers all the best local tips about where to go, and more importantly where not to. Everything is near yet you'll feel nicely private and remote.

Location

The neighbourhood

You're 150 yards up a single lane so you'll feel quite remote but it's only a five-minute walk to Millers Dale, where you’ll also find the station with The Refreshment Room - walkers and cyclists can pick up a picnic and join the Monsal Trail. Amble along the river Wye to Litton Mill, visit Monk's Dale Nature Reserve for wildflowers, pick up excellent fish and chips from Tideswell, 1.5 miles away. Chatsworth is eight miles.

Local points of interest from Lou & Alan Renfree

  • Spend a whole day out exploring Chatsworth Estate with its acres of parkland, award winning gardens, farm shop and varied scheduled events throughout the year or visit romantic Haddon Hall on the banks of the river Wye in Bakewell.
  • Venture south to the beautiful Dovedale valley and the famous stepping stones and then take in the scenic White Peak villages of Tissington and Ilam.
  • Keen on design? The David Mellor Round Building cutlery factory and Design shop / cafe is a must at nearby Hathersage.
  • Little Bank is only 6 miles from the Derbyshire spa town of Buxton. Visit the warm natural spring of St Ann’s Drinking Well, Pavilion Gardens, Opera House or the newly renovated Grade 1 listed Crescent.
  • To the North and only a short drive away is the dramatic Dark Peak area. Visit picturesque Castleton and its famous limestone caves, the village of Edale marking one end of the iconic Pennine Way or watch the sunrise or sunset at the summit of Mam Tor.
  • No trip to The Peak would be complete without sampling the ‘Original (and very delicious) Bakewell Pudding. But be warned it may not be your last!

Introducing

Lou & Alan Renfree

Lou runs her beautiful by-appointment shop Chalet at Home from the other end of the building and you'll see many examples of her products in the cottage. Alan is a retired engineer but confesses to being 'quite nerdy' about fell running, walking and cycling so he's your man for advice on routes. They renovated the house and the cottage completely by themselves and want you to feel very much at home here.
