The Experience

This fine inn sits between the Dales and the Lakes in an ancient, pretty market town. It backs onto St Mary’s churchyard, where wildflowers flourish, and on the far side you’ll find “the fairest view in England” to quote John Ruskin. Herons fish the river, lambs graze the fells beyond, a vast sky hangs above – Turner came to paint it in 1825.

As for the Sun, it does what all good inns do, it looks after you in style. Dating back to 1670, the building started life as a butcher’s. Inside, there’s lots of pretty old stuff – stone walls, rosewood panelling, wood-burners working overtime – then warm colours, fresh flowers and the daily papers, so eat in style. Head chef Joe Robinson honed his skills in Michelin award-winning restaurants and he makes good use of fabulous and unique local produce.

Bedrooms have well-dressed beds and smart bathrooms; you wake to delicious breakfasts, and don’t miss Sunday lunch – it’s cracking.

Reviews

Set in a narrow street, with the St Mary's Church in view, the Sun is a fine example of an old inn. Step under the ancient portico into a low-ceilinged bar that buzzes all day – locals supping pints and visitors enjoying delicious bar and restaurant food. Cosy rooms ramble upstairs, some overlook the peaceful churchyard. Pootle around town or strike out to The Lakes and the Yorkshire Dales.

The Sun Inn was everything we had hoped for as part of our UK Christmas holiday. A warm welcome, very comfortable rooms, lively well stocked bar, consistently good service and especially the best food we experienced on our total trip, from fine dining, to breakfast to bar food. On top of the location in such a lively and interesting town made this a really unexpected pleasure.

Location

The neighbourhood

Perched above the river Lune, the town enjoys stunning views of both Ingleborough and the Howgills. Walking is one of the top activities and you're on the doorstep of two of England's most popular National Parks. To the east the Dales are bisected by the Pennine Way, while to the south the Forest of Bowland puts the accent on rugged grandeur and solitude. Hop on the Settle to Carlisle railway.

Local points of interest from Iain & Jenny Black

  • Kirkby Lonsdale (mentioned by the Sunday Times as one of the top 50 best places to live in the countryside) is situated where Cumbria, the Yorkshire Dales and the Trough of Bowland meet, providing an almost infinite amount of walking in the area.
  • Surrounded by beautiful Lake District and Yorkshire Dales villages and towns, a fantastic base for touring the lesser visited Yorkshire Dales area. From Settle a train can be caught northwards, taking you over the Ribblesdale viaduct.
  • There is also a train from Wennington, just 10 minutes drive from Kirkby Lonsdale, that travels east through Bentham, Clapham, Giggleswick and over to Skipton and beyond, a lovely way to visit these areas.
  • Visit Kirkby Lonsdale Golf Club, set in 220 acres of the beautiful Lune Valley, and enjoy their challenging 18 hole par 72 course which has spectacular views in all directions.
  • Levens Hall is a short drive away and one of the finest stately homes in South Cumbria. The grand estate boasts tenanted farms with their produce available to buy in the gift shop, a lush deer park and stunning Grade I listed garden.
