The Experience
This was Henry’s great great aunt’s art studio, with large windows facing north. You’ll feel quite private in this open-plan space with stone mullion windows, a baby grand piano and original art and antiques. The bedroom is upstairs with stacked wooden book shelves, lovely views and the best possible mattresses on a large double and an extra single (plus a sofa bed for one more); back downstairs is the shower room.
The kitchen is a decent size, colourful and with a dresser full of vintage china. Basics are left for you and also a loaf of bread, cake, eggs and apples if they have them. You can also buy their own jams, marmalades, sausages and bacon. If you know you’re going to be late in arriving Anna is happy to leave you a cold platter of meat, cheeses, bread and fruit, and if you can’t be bothered with breakfast you can walk up to the house and have it with the B&B guests.
The garden is yours to roam: pack a picnic and find a table among the quiet, ancient trees and much birdsong.

Location
The neighbourhood
You're in the middle of a thriving traditional upland farm estate. A walk up the road or in the woods is a beautiful experience at any time of year, with views over to the Pennines, woods, crags, drystone walls and fields. You'll catch a glimpse of all sorts of birds - nuthatches, treecreepers, woodpeckers, ravens and woodcock. Greystoke is one mile away and has a decent pub plus the Cycle Cafe.
Local points of interest from Henry & Anna Howard
- Would you like to stay somewhere where young children and dogs aren't just allowed but are welcomed? Our own young children Nicholas and Lucy love making friends with visitors, both two and four-footed!
- Would you like to stay somewhere where you can buy bacon and sausages from the free range rare breed pigs in the paddock, and eggs from the chickens roaming the garden, as well as jams and marmalades made from our own produce? Look no further!
- Would you like to stay somewhere with a house and garden whose history goes back centuries, with a walled orchard, an utterly tranquil location and views over to the Pennines and Lakeland fells? Our garden is a haven for birdlife and red squirrels too!
- If you can tear yourself away, the local village, Greystoke, has a great pub; the Lake District and Eden Valley are just down the road, and there are easy day trips to the Yorkshire Dales, Hadrian's Wall, the North Pennines AONB and into Scotland.
- We're handy for the increasingly popular local events such as the world-famous Dalemain Marmalade Festival; PotFest in the Pens and the Park; Hutton-in-the-Forest Horse Trials, and the Lakes Chilli Fest - all within 5 or 6 miles.

Introducing
Henry & Anna Howard
Henry's family have lived at Johnby Hall and nearby Greystoke Castle for centuries, and he will happily give you the full history if you wish it! He and Anna are both passionate about history and about continuing to keep Johnby as a living family home. They and their young family are dedicated to making both B&B and self-catering guests feel at home here too. They are entirely warm and welcoming.
A family and dog-friendly bolthole, or a romantic place for 2. Either way your surroundings are lovely - just woodland and fields, a short walk to a decent local, B&B breakfast if you can't be bothered to cook and all of the Lakes your playground.
