The Experience
Step inside to a light open-plan living area with a slate fireplace, wood-burner, comfy sofas and a high vaulted ceiling. Views from every window are of the wild hillsides stretching into the distance, where wild fell ponies and sheep munch and red squirrels bound – this is totally unspoilt countryside. The kitchen has all a cook might need and there’s a big table for sociable meals. An interconnecting door to The Byre means you can take both for a party of eight and there’s plenty of room, including a mezzanine.
The two lovely bedrooms are downstairs with super king size zip and link doubles (which can be twins), crisp cotton, plump bedding and bathrooms with local soaps. Colours are inspired by your surroundings, the feel is calm and warm. Spend light summer evenings eating on the outdoor terrace.
You can walk across fields or down a quiet lane to award-winning pubs. You’ll find a generous welcome basket upon arrival.

We had a great stay occupying both the Haystore and the Byre. Beautiful property with beautiful surroundings despite the ever changing weather. We enjoyed adventurous dogs walks, the local pubs for evening meals and our swimrun event on Windermere. Thanks Carly, we love the place and will go on to recommend.

The Green is absolutely gorgeous and The Haystore is a fabulous cottage - photos really don’t do it justice! The main bed was large and comfy, the shower was lovely and the sofa in the living area was the most comfortable sofa I’d ever sat on! We also loved the snug area on the mezzanine. The location is great, not too far away from various pubs and small towns, but secluded enough for complete peace and quiet - we came home super relaxed. We loved evening walks down to The Black Swan pub especially through all of the sheep! We really had the most wonderful time!

Have just returned from a 3 night stay at the Byre and Haystore. We were 2 families of 4 and the accommodation was perfect! Plenty of space, inside and out, and one of the best equipped and most tasteful holiday homes we've ever stayed at! Beautiful walks, two pubs within walking distance and hosts on hand if needed. Would highly recommend

This is an immaculate cottage in an idyllic location with only the guests' needs at heart. It is tastefully furnished to a high degree and comfy and warm – underfloor heating provided by a ground source heat pump and solar panels. Everything is thought of – from binoculars to watch the red squirrels to an electronic welcome book including local walks. It is 5 star!

We loved our recent stay and despite the weather being rainy we all looked forward to returning to the luxury of The Haystore each day. Every detail has been carefully thought of from a delicious welcome pack of treats to dressing gowns in the bathrooms, underfloor heating and even accessories for an evening of stargazing! We had the most beautiful views across the Howgill Fells and even spotted some red squirrels in the garden. There are so many different walks straight from the door of the Haystore and we hope to return one day to do some more exploring. Thank you for such a lovely week.

Location
The neighbourhood
Nature lovers and seekers of peace will be very relieved – you could walk all day without coming across another soul. Ravenstonedale is a 25-minute walk or a two-minute drive for two pubs. Pretty Kirkby Stephen has a railway station, foodie shops and cafés. Sedbergh, the 'book town', is close or you can hop on a steam train, head to the Lakes, explore wild spaces or join a guided walk with owner Richard.
Local points of interest from Richard and Carly
- Enjoy a fabulous meal and wonderful selection of cask ales & wines at the award-winning Black Swan in Ravenstonedale. Number 20 in the 2023 Top 50 UK Gastropubs the menu revolves around locally sourced, seasonal Cumbrian dishes. Dog & family friendly.
- Take a hike in the fabulous Howgill Fells; as Alfred Wainwright once described them “a herd of squatting elephants” the Howgill’s are often unfrequented and offer a superb range of hikes; many of which can be started straight from the door.
- Wrap up and enjoy an evening of stargazing using the guide & kit provided. Located in a Dark Skies reserve we have very little light pollution meaning that on a clear night you can see thousands of stars and even distant galaxies!
- Take a bike ride to Pendragon Castle, described as a romantic ruin, founded by Uther Pendragon, father of Arthur Pendragon of Round Table fame. The 6-mile ride through the countryside to get there on single track lanes is magical.
- Ever wanted to learn how to navigate in the hills or mountains with a proper map? Book a day of guided walking with owner Richard and learn some new skills along the way. Pop away the guide books…he’ll have you planning your own routes in no time!
- Visit the local dog friendly attractions with your furry friends. Brough Castle Ice Cream Parlour and Tearoom, Lowther Castle and Gardens, Grizedale Forest and Whinlatter Forest, The Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway or how about the Ullswater's 'Steamers'.

Introducing
Richard and Carly
For Carly and Richard the seed was sown many years ago about living in the countryside and having a holiday let property which would allow them to share their love of nature and the outdoors with guests. Their eco credentials are sound with ground source heating, solar panels and their own borehole, but they are keen to go further in their journey towards biodiversity and sustainability.
I recently booked all 3 properties at The Green for my 50th birthday. The standard of all them is off the charts. I’ve stayed in plenty of holiday lets, but the thought that has gone into equipping these is next level. Could not have wanted more and were even given a lift to the station when taxis proved to be an issue.
