The Experience
Bird watchers will spend hours on the sofa watching the feeders outside – you may spot a red squirrel too. Your big open-plan space has a high, beamed ceiling, a dresser full of antique china, a squashy sofa and books, games and puzzles for rainy days. Otherwise you’ll be out wandering the estate, or joining walking and cycling paths galore. In the kitchen Anna leaves you a loaf of bread, cake, eggs and apples when they have them.
All is flexible: go up to the house for a big B&B cooked breakfast if you prefer, order a cold platter of meats, cheeses, bread and fruit if you know you’re going to arrive late. Down a corridor are two fresh, pretty bedrooms with excellent mattresses and chunky beams, plus a separate shower room. A courtyard is shared with B&B guests or wander the garden – there’s masses of space.
There are ten acres of woodland to explore, full of nuthatches, woodpeckers and many other birds. The pub is a one mile walk.

Location
The neighbourhood
The nearest village is Greystoke (where Tarzan came from), just a mile away and walkable, with a good pub, a post office and an outdoor swimming pool. Skelton is 3.5 miles for the Dove and Gun pub where you'll find Johnby Hall pork on the menu. Penrith is 5 miles, you can joing the C2C cycle route, also walk the Lakes, visit castles and waterfalls, climb fells, take boat trips and wild swim.
Local points of interest from Henry & Anna Howard
- Would you like to stay somewhere where young children and dogs aren't just allowed but are welcomed? Our own young children Nicholas and Lucy love making friends with visitors, both two and four-footed!
- Would you like to stay somewhere where you can buy bacon and sausages from the free range rare breed pigs in the paddock, and eggs from the chickens roaming the garden, as well as jams and marmalades made from our own produce? Look no further!
- Would you like to stay somewhere with a house and garden whose history goes back centuries, with a walled orchard, an utterly tranquil location and views over to the Pennines and Lakeland fells? Our garden is a haven for birdlife and red squirrels too!
- We're handy for the increasingly popular local events such as the world-famous Dalemain Marmalade Festival; PotFest in the Pens and the Park; Hutton-in-the-Forest Horse Trials, and the Lakes Chilli Fest - all within 5 or 6 miles.
- If you can tear yourself away, the local village, Greystoke, has a great pub; the Lake District and Eden Valley are just down the road, and there are easy day trips to the Yorkshire Dales, Hadrian's Wall, the North Pennines AONB and into Scotland.

Introducing
Henry & Anna Howard
Henry's family have lived at Johnby Hall and nearby Greystoke Castle for centuries, and he will happily give you the full history if you wish it! He and Anna are both passionate about history and about continuing to keep Johnby as a living family home. They and their young family are dedicated to making both B&B and self-catering guests feel at home here too. They are entirely warm and welcoming.
A lovely place to stay! Welcoming, comfortable and in a great position for exploring the Lakes and other parts of Cumbria. Our Jack Russells loved the woods nearby and we loved the local pub. Highly recommended and thank you Henry & Anna for making our stay such a success!
